Why does anyone NEED an assault rifle?

Exactly! Forcing people to own cars to get around makes them much less free. Ironically I’m typing this on the train as I head downtown to work.
Demonstrating that you are at liberty to not own or drive an automobile. All you need do is chose to live in a city where you can either walk or take mass transit, Uber or taxi.

Of course that's what you might say after having one of your sacred cows so cleanly run though. Few things, save aircraft, are more thoroughly regulated, licensed, and registered than vehicles and their drivers, yet they manage to slaughter more of the human race than any rifle made.

We can manage to keep cars out of schoolrooms, churches and grocery stores.
 
Weapons of any sort don’t solve problems. They are used to try to solve issues but matters get even worst. Grew up in Midwest hunted for years, shot high power rifles for years, a real passion, never got so mad they were a solution to a problem. I feel people need to behave themselves and learn to be empathetic and compassionate. I am not anti-gun, anti-assault weapon , ‘yes’, these for made for the military originally.
 
Life is far more than need...sometimes you want something and that is enough justification for owning it. As long as it is legal it is no one else's business what you decide to own.
 
I understand these points presented and have lived aboard where civilians brought their automatic weapons home on the train and bus, they were in the military reserve and it was required of them. This same country a 16 yr old American kid drunk riding a moped was caught by the police and thrown in jail. He asked them to call his American father they refused, saying things are not done that way here. Laws are in place for a reason.
 
I'm a gun owner and I don't understand it myself. I'm a veteran. I see guns as a tool, to either put meat on the table or protect one's home and family. Neither of those requires an assault weapon. This isn't Hollywood, a gang of villains isn't going to assault my home. If anything it'll be a crackhead looking for something to sell. My 9mm, 12 gauge, and .22 take care of everything just fine.

Having said that, it doesn't matter if I understand it. If it's legal I will support your right to own one.

A final note on those that believe that the government will someday come door to door for your guns, like the fucking Gestapo. THAT WILL NEVER, EVER, EVER HAPPEN. Do you want to know how I know that? Because our police and military aren't faceless goons. They are your sons and daughters, father and mothers, friends and neighbors. They could no more oppress our country than you, no matter what orders they were given. Should a government ever instruct them to do so, would very shortly not be our government any longer.

So those of you desperately clutching your ARs waiting for the stormtroopers to arrive, chill out, and get on with your life. Nuff said.

No its that one is a weapon and one is a mode of transportation. This would be up there with claiming that more people drown in pools than get killed by rifles. Which I'm willing to bet between unattended children who fell in a pool and drunk idiots on Spring and Summer Break the numbers aren't even close.


WE also have all sorts of regulations on cars. Cops will pull you over if they even see you driving too fast let alone swerving back and forth. Even going too slow can get their attention. If you have various health conditions they can take your license either temporarily or permantely. I had a seizure a few years back and that's a one year license suspension.

Still you might as well compare how many people die of health conditions directly tied to being poor in America. While that is something we should work on its not a fucking gun. And for the record I was calling both of you stupid for that comparison.

I don't much care about rifles, assault or otherwise. I recognize that Americans are too fucking stupid to start trying to get fewer handguns in the hands of citizens. Though that would be fun to see at the SCOTUS just to see their reasoning for why a handgun would pass the "Well Regulated" part of the 2A. Remember, I believe it was Justice Alito but it was a bit before my time that rules that a sawed off shotgun has no place on the battlefield and can absolutely be banned. So I would LOVE to see the logic, especially in an Urban environment on how a pistol is appropriate but a sawed off is not.

I don't desperately clutch any of my guns. But I might suggest you get your hands on a copy of the Constitution and read it. You supposefly defended it yet don't seem to understand it.

God? That assumes that someone believes in YOUR God, or any God at all. Further someone above posted that the Constitution as written makes little sense in today's world, I maintain that the same can be said for vast parts of the Bible.

Well, if we continue down the path this country is on now it will destroy itself from within so eventually a new constitution of some sort will be written and our country will be massively changed, and not for the better.
Thomas Jefferson also said "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
