British Music

This thread is for me. I’m American but an Anglophile for sure. Especially music, football, pub culture, youth culture etc.

Love the old school freakbeat: The Flies, The Creation, The Pretty Things

Northern Soul: mostly American soul, but damned cool.

70s Bootboy/Bovver Rock: The Crunch, Iron Virgin, The Fresh (this genre is amazingly great imo)

Punk: Sex Pistols, The Clash, Chelsea, The Lurkers

Oi! : Cockney Rejects, Sham69, Cock Sparrer, The 4Skins

Britpop: Blur, Suede, Ride, Supergrass
Cock Sparrer’s We’re Coming Back is good times.

I’m breaking in here to say that the first time I read the title of this thread I thought it said Bitch music and I thought, man @_Ritch_ chose violence today.
And when I looked at the first post, I then misread “Ritch” (the OP) as “Bitch”. Thanks Muse, all your fault!

I know. I didn’t like them as a teen. Too poppy, I thought. Then in my 30s, it all made sense. Now one of my top bands.

But so many good bands from that era. (Maybe a tiny bit after the clash) Buzzcocks, lurkers, Menace, Chelsea, Sham69.

Not sure how The Duke Spirit flew under the radar. They were so good. They may still be together.

Saw them in NYC in 2012. One of the most amazing live shows I’d ever seen.

I think the best consistent live band I’ve very seen was Squeeze. Seen them 5-6x over the years and they have never not been great.

Glenn Tilbrook, Chris Difford and Jools were amazing.

I love so many of their songs, but I think Uo the Junction is their best. Great songwriters and great musicians.

This song will always remind me when I got out of the army, I was waiting for my wife and daughter but shortly thereafter my wife divorced me. (Weird role reversal, I was the soldier and she ran off with some other dude.)

I’ve still got this on single somewhere. Such a beautifully crafted song. By the end of it you feel like you’ve been drawn in by a really well acted film.

Lot of love for bands on the Creation record label, im reading Alan Mcgee's book just now, highly recommend it, is aye opening to the music scene at that time https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81UbB5jADGL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_FMwebp_.jpg

I saw a few from them, Ride were phenomenal. I still listen to a lot of what's referred to as 'shoegazing' MBV, Slowdive, Swervedriver, Curve, Lush, Chapterhouse (more below), but then you've a lot of Scottish bands I don't think I've seen posted here, Primal Scream, Deacon Blue, Franz Ferdinand, Belle and Sebastian, Biffy Clyro ('Mon the Biff!), Del Amiti, Cocteau Twins, Travis and the most moving, beautiful and breathtaking The Blue Nile, by god they are unfuckingbelievable..

I could go on and on and I've tried not to mentioned what others have (the 2 greatest bands in the world are Led Zepp and Queen, Floyd prob 3rd (I listen to planet rock a lot and Floyd - Breathe has just came on, stone cold classic)) but I want to give u one of my all time fav songs by a band that didn't go very far which I was really sad about. Loved living in the 80's and 90's for music (which is messed up when u think kids today talking about 90's music was me in the 90's raving about 60's music..), this is one of the greatest 'shoegazing' tracks of all time, in my opinion anyway. Chapterhouse - Pearl, hope yi enjoy..

I’d never heard this song before. Pretty good.

Ride are amazing. Live, they are one of the loudest bands I’ve ever heard.

Hadn’t heard this song or this band in a while. Classic mid 80s punk rock and this whole album reminds me of being a 15 yo punk.

Peter and the Testube Babies - Blown Out Again

Yes - they are very good! I’m not as familiar w them. I’ve heard some of their songs on Sirius but I must confess I don’t have any of their material.

solid song. Thanks.

Wow!! Super good. I had to listen to it all the way thru. Damn. Wish I was high listening to that. I will check out some of their other stuff. Great song.
