Gun violence, American style - 1 in 5

Not impressed with your technical definition of assault weapon, either. If it can fire rapidly and with great kill power, it can be used in an assault on innocent civilians. Get your smug head out of your ass.
A baseball bat, a hammer, a sword, a tire iron, and more can all be used in an assault on innocent civilians. Are they then assault weapons by your far too generic definition.

Not and kill nine people in a minute, you squarmy excuse for a human being. That argument is as full of shit as you gun nuts are.

That's a ridiculous assumption. If you want to speak person to person, then you should do better than to start out with a condescending and utterly ridiculous assumption. Comparing drunk driving and 2nd hand smoke victims to shooting victims is like comparing one grape and one orange to one grapefruit. An interesting tidbit that I did not know is that about 41k Americans die per year by second hand smoke - between lung cancer and heart disease. Nasty habit that one. Logical point of interest, being it is banned in most states' bars then it is most likely that they get exposed at home.

It is funny you should bring that up however. Drunk driving has been criminalized and is treated very seriously by the law. And like you said, smoking has been banned in most states' bars and in all public buildings. Action was taken - because before that it was something of a public menace. Much like gun violence has become.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I'd love to see mental health issues treated. However republicans vote against them just about every single time they're in play. Just like they vote against so many of the social programs which help support people - to keep them from snapping in desperation.

I've asked many times and only so far one person has put forth an answer, so I'll ask you: how many guns are too many guns? We've got more than 1.2 guns for every man, woman, child and infant in this country. That's over 400 million guns. That's more than a fair few.

We do not have a lack. That is abundantly clear.

A good law - like the semi automatic weapon ban that the republicans repealed? And ever since then mass shootings have increased at a steady and regular pace. Or the legislation that Trump signed which made it easier for the mentally ill to procure guns? Or the one which Desantis just signed in Florida allowing constitutional carry and dropping all requirements for training and a background check?

All of these were sold as "good laws".
I am not a politician, I have too much respect for myself to sell my soul to the highest bidder and both sides do that every damn day. I have no more influence over laws that are passed and/or repealed than any other citizen. I agree with some and disagree with others. But to ask me about republican decisions in states where I do not reside seems a waste of time or just more pontification.

Second hand smoking deaths still occur because although smoking is 100% tied to cancer, emphysema, COPD, and worsening of asthma there is too much money and political power in the tobacco industry. Drunk driving is NOT taken as seriously as you would like to believe. There are time and time again cases of people with 5, 6, 7....10, 11, 12 drunk driving convictions caught again. Why? How? Both kill people almost every day yet nothing is done.

As far as how many guns is enough that's easy. As long as they are legal there should be no limit.

Today’s news about Clarence Thomas is clear evidence that, in addition to politicians, Supreme Court Justices can, and have been, bought and paid for.

I quoted directly what YOU posted. I picked up no banner of any sort. YOU fucked up in what you posted and now are trying to push it off on me. You said men and dingbats. Define dingbats.

You've got a lot of commitment to having American children slaughtered so the gun industry can have profits.

I imagine you speak of cigarettes in glowing terms with your track record.

At this point you're employing desperate and ridiculous arguments.

When you can digest the fact that the overwhelming vast majority of gun violence is perpetrated by men and can accept that, then we can move on from your little temper tantrum.

The reason TrailerTrash is intractable on the issue is because they are a “man” and they OWN an assault rifle.

That ^ causes them to pretend that laws restricting / criminalizing other unacceptably dangerous things (including weapons) haven’t been passed and successfully enforced to the benefit of society.

That ^ leads them to believe that it is reasonable to just continue with the status quo regarding the actual weapons and accessories that are primarily used in mass shootings.

Even discussing restrictions involving the weapon TrailerTrash OWNS is a nonstarter because it presents a potential cost or inconvenience to them personally. And the one thing a sociopath can’t abide by is ANYTHING that interferes with their hyper-prioritized self interests.

NO argument, no matter how logical and reasonable, will elicit ANY movement from their entrenched position.

SAD!!!

How about when a mother tries to get help for her son with obvious mental health issues and is rebuffed at every turn? Let's start there. Why is it so hard for family members to get emergency psychiatric help for there loved ones? And then after the fact people wonder why nothing was done.
Let’s start instead with gun owners who don’t have mothers, and not fix blame on the inaction of family members.

On a finer point, let’s say a person has been diagnosed a borderline sociopath. Should that person be allowed to own firearms?

Define dingbats. Because you specifically said men and dingbats.

You are pathetic. Trying to seek help before a tragedy is not inaction. Pull your head out of yourxass abd stop pontificating and actually read what I wrote.

Facts:
  • 1 in 5 Americans have had a gun pointed at them
  • 1 in 5 Americans know someone who has been killed gy gun violence
  • We have more guns than people in the US
  • Mass shootings are occurring at the rate of more than once per day
  • Men commit over 98% of gun violence

Responses:
  • Dismissive of sheer numbers of number of guns already in US
  • List of options that are being actively fought against by the political party advocating for less gun regulation
  • Denial of republican efforts to decrease and eliminate mental health funding, social support funding
  • Deflection to race
  • Deflection to alcohol, cigarettes, covid
  • Deflection to "no law matters" argument
  • Deflection to second hand smoke
  • Digging in on "no law matters"
  • Appeal to decency
  • Deflection to the single trans shooter
  • Ignoring of the reality of republican policy and those advocating for it
  • Aggressive deflection regardless of statistical realities
  • Excuse making for ignorance
  • Deflection again to second hand smoke
  • Support of all guns in America in massive numbers

Note: interesting that there are so many references to smoking. When it was discovered that smoking was so dangerous, we got:

  • labels on cigarettes
  • restrictions on purchase
  • penalties on sellers
  • government funding to states and companies to stop smoking
  • private and public institutions working to stop smoking and educate people etc.

And ironically smoking was sold to the American public as no big deal, not harmful and even enjoyable. All while the tobacco companies raked in massive profits. While Americans died. And now it is correctly perceived as the public menace it is.

The similarities are there, but they are not working on your side of the debate.

As to the rest of your hang up with men being labeled as dingbats, that is your emotional interpretation of my words. Dingbats are dingbats and men are men. Men can be dingbats and dingbats can be men. Any of the Venn diagram crossover is just statistical. Unlike gun violence. That Venn diagram is 98%+ male.

What you wrote.
Do you even want a solution or do you just want a bully pulpit to pontificate from?
You posted that we need to address mental health. How can that be done at the point of sale?

I’m a bit surprised that you omitted the fact that “Big Tobacco” was also subject o massive legal action and ultimately paid $246 billion to settle with plaintiffs.

Otherwise, spot on.

👍

Do you think TrailerTrash is BoBo???

Hmm…..

It's still early and I haven't had any coffee yet. ;)

There’s more than one sociopath posting here, obviously.

True…..

But not having a mother present and being a self identified “borderline sociopath” were kinda BoBo’s thing.

Just sayin’……
