Chaotic Coffee Klatch (tea also available)

When i grew up as a wain there was only 3 teevee channels, mobile phones were science fiction, fruit and veg were seasonal and there seemed a lot more innocence, the latter part being total bollox. How fast technology has changed. My daughter is nearly 8, has access to hundreds of channels, has mobile devices, that she understands way more than me and I ain't no technophobe, that have touch screens and fit in your pocket and are thousands of times more powerful than the 1st computer I had (Spectrum 48k, 48 kilobytes ffs!). Its fascinating. As a long time geek and sci fi fan to see where its going and what she might have when she's my age..
It is amazing. In High School we were taught to use a slide rule. In college everyone ran to buy the latest calculator. When working at the U I saw and used the one of the first computers where I had to key punch programs and data onto cards. Today we carry a personal computer in our pocket that also makes phone calls and video calls. Yes, I get you. Technology advances are amazing and wonder what my grand children will see.

Never learned backgammon or chess…
I play both, I have respect and appreciate that people have been playing essentially the same games for thousands of years. Both games are very easy to learn but take a lifetime of learning which again makes them remarkable. I taught my wife over 20 years ago and we still play nearly every weekend, id say my win ratio these days is about 60/40 in my favour, used to be a lot higher, shes became a very good player 🥰

Chess on the other hand I've not played in about 7/8 years. Used to be in a local club where I grew up, is an absolutely fascinating game, thousands of books about it. It's essentially war. I used to be decent but think I'd loose pretty easily these days..

I haven't played chess in decades. We leaned in school, there was a chess boom in my class and we often played when waiting for the teacher to arrive, continuing before the next lesson, etc. But that was over 30 years ago.
