What I really want is a serger! No space to set up a workplace though.

I bought my first serger years ago, on sale, and some brand I had never heard of. It worked great and I loved using it, especially on inside seams with fabrics that fray easily. However, it started acting up and then just stopped working right. It would probably coat the same to have someone fix it as I paid for it, so instead I bought a new Singer (I love Singer) and it has been super awesome to use.
