Here's the deal - I seriously don't give a fuck what you think of me. If a person who has never held a gun in their hands in their life can walk into a store and buy a high powered weapon and in the same day that kills multiple people with a single trigger pull and within seconds, then that needs to be corrected yesterday.

Cry more about what that means to you on how you believe me to be. A person with that type of gun should be required to prove they need one on the regular and someone wanting to buy one should have to be probed up the ass to prove it.

I have preached this before here but I will say it yet again, the issue is violent criminals and inadequate punishment, and the mentally ill in a woefully inadequate mental health care system. When we have violent criminals released on bail or in no bail cases that then perpetrate other violent crimes up to and including murder the system is seriously flawed. When families have stated repeatedly we tried to get our loved one help but were rebuked by mental health care services the system is seriously flawed.

After 911 the US implemented drastic security measures via the TSA. Planes weren't banned but access was restricted (no fly lists) and travellers have to go through security screens in order to travel. Plus we gave the government authority to spy on citizens.

No such equivalent measures have been implemented even though 15 times as many people die from gun violence every year than on 911.

The sad fact is that someone could be a firearms expert, with all the knowledge of all the weapons and gun owners would still not listen. They will not listen to anyone. Their constant bleating 2nd amendment, 2nd amendment, while children in their schools are being massacred shows that no matter what the argument, how erudite or knowledgable the debator is, they will not listen.

We are going to find this shooting is very different from many others. This girl...was an ex student. In a religious school. Who wants to bet that abuse happened and no one did anything? That is not condoning the behavior. Killing kids is simply unacceptable. But something snapped here. And it was directed. What did she see in the kids?

the abuse may be real or the shooter's experience of acts that weren't but were enough to feel so. Since this shooter was born female but had transitioned to using male pronouns on social media, it's fair to assume the kind of treatment they experienced in school may well have been/experienced as a deniial of who they were as a person, even a punishment.

I am not looking to make excuses, but unless we get a better understanding of why shooters get to feel that their actions to take life—especially to ignore the fact that there were children—are valid, righteous, the only path forward for revenge/retribution then we'll never get ahead of the problem. Banning assault weapons is an obvious partial solution; unfortunately, that move does nothing to address the kinds of behaviours the shooters have had to deal with from others or any mental problems involved. When it comes to the kids, it's not hard to believe the shooter had so dehumanized them in their own mind that they were not a reason to hold back from murdering them.

Without guns, it would be much less of a problem.
