You really are uninformed. Our satellite camera resolution is much better than that and has been for decades. US spy Satellites are probably rocking less than 6 CM resolution as we speak. Civilian imaging is limited by law to 25 CM.

What you don't know is it will take more than one fighter aircraft to punch holes in this thing with cannon fire, it's huge. The point would be not to explode those gases in mid-air but to bring it down slowly in order to retrieve the balloon and its technology in the ocean. Naval ships are on the way to the area now. The tankers are there to refuel those aircraft if they need to remain on station.
The tankers only need to be at their regular service altitude to refuel fighter aircraft. The F-22 has an upper service altitude of 65,000 ft. so I see no problem.

General Kellogg on Fox News used the term "orbiting the balloon's location," a former National Security Advisor, I trust his sources and knowledge of the situation. So in this context location can easily be equated with proximity. Don't you think?

They do have a service ceiling of 58,000 ft. and its cannon has a 2000 foot range.
