Kind of in between. Technically poly but hierarchical, which irritates a lot of poly people. We want to remain a committed couple living together. Agreed. I have often made the case that the whole women are wired to want monogamy so we have someone to support and protect us premise is flawed. The patriarchy put us at risk and denied access to the means to make a living so that we would be compelled to seek out monogamy for the benefit of men. Without artificially impose constraints we would be expanding the gene pool and enjoying a diverse sex life as much or more so than men.

I can't recommend the book "Sex at Dawn" highly enough (if you're interested in pop anthropology about sexuality). For our closest relatives, bonobos, female "promiscuity" is the norm, and sex is shared for social bonding purposes much like food. Their groups are highly cooperative, and instead of males competing for access to mates, the idea is their sperm competes when females have sex with multiple males. The authors make a strong case that this may have been the typical situation for early human hunter-gatherer societies, and that the whole focus on monogamy and particularly on female purity and chastity and fidelity is totally tied in with the rise of agriculture and private property and the need to determine paternity in order to pass things on to the correct offspring.

That seems completely plausible. While wandering after herds and eating what was at hand, there was no reason to stake your claim to much of anything except your own weapons and equipment.

Interesting. I will have a look at that. The whole premise that women are "hardwired" to be more sexually restrained than men has long seemed suspect to me. It seems as though there are two variations on this theme both of which are flawed. The first is the idea that it is in our DNA and always has been. The second is that we have evolved to adapt to our environment over many generations and millennia (evolutionary psychology), so even if our sexual inclinations are a product of our environment and the environment changes, any incremental change our sexual proclivities will occur at the pace of evolution.

But when we look at modern data in terms of female attitudes towards sex and monogamy things have changed dramatically within 50 years. The primary environmental changes are that women have become more equal and been given better access to the ability to make a living. The ability to plan pregnancy or not and embrace sex for pleasure has been greatly enhanced. Acceptance of misogynist attitudes and public shaming of female sexual liberation has become less acceptable. Oppressive religious moralizing has waned. I am sure there are some more than I am missing.

The actual observed behaviour is that once the things in our environment that compelled women to have a more restrained attitude towards sex were removed or altered, our attitudes towards sex and embrace of our own sexual liberation happened almost instantly in evolutionary terms. That suggests we never were hardwired to have the restrained view towards sex that prevailed in the recent past and if our attitudes have evolved over the millennia it certainly wasn't toward being the patriarchal stereotype of female sexuality.

If we were hardwired to be much more sexually restrained there would be no need for patriarchal society to oppress and control female sexuality. The oppression and control exists (or existed) because the female desire for sexual liberation was always right under the surface.
