If you are reading this on Wednesday, then it is sine die in the esteemed Republican-led Kansas legislature. Sine die is a Latin term that Kansas Republicans can’t translate means it’s the last day of this year’s legislative session. And what are those fine folks up to? Not funding schools!

On Wednesday, the Kansas legislative session will wrap up in Topeka likely without a resolution for school funding.

On Friday, the courts ruled that the revised school funding formula was still not equitable and maintained that schools will shut down if the disparities are not resolved by June 30.

And what are those pathetic cockwhistles actually doing this fine Wednesday?

The Kansas Senate is considering a resolution condemning a recent Obama administration decree that public schools allow transgender students to use the restrooms that match their gender identity, not their sex at birth.

But back to this school funding thing, like THAT even matters. The dealio is that the state supreme court ruled Friday that Kansas must fund its public schools in an equitable manner.

The court has been kicking the Kansas legislature in the nuts over this for a long time now, actually! Way back in 2014, the court said, “Hey you idiots in the lege, you can’t just give the rich school districts all the money and leave crumbs for the poor districts,” because that is not constitutional.

And as the New York Times explains, the court and the legislature have been fighting ever since:

"In February, the court said that a solution proposed by lawmakers, to use block grants to allocate funds, had failed to address inequities in schools. In response, the Legislature passed a bill that it said gave poorer districts a fair share of funding. Gov. Sam Brownback, a Republican, signed the measure in April."

In a 47-page ruling, the court rejected that bill, saying the Legislature’s formula “creates intolerable, and simply unfair, wealth-based disparities among the districts.”

In other words, NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

The final day of the Kansas legislative session is often nothing more than a formality--but this year, a legal fight over school funding forced Kansas lawmakers to meet and consider how to respond.

The state Supreme Court recently said the system Kansas lawmakers use to fund schools is unconstitutional, but lawmakers decided not to respond during the final day of the legislative session. The court says lawmakers have created unconstitutional funding disparities among school districts that must be fixed or schools will be closed. The lack of action means there could be a special session or a showdown between the court and lawmakers.


Democratic Sen. Laura Kelly says the solution is simple: appropriate around $40 million to comply. She said lawmakers' inaction is bad for schools.

“We are leaving our schools in a world of uncertainty. What are they going to do about summer school, what are they going to do about teacher contracts?” Kelly said.

If there is a special session, it will need to happen soon: The court says the issue must be fixed by the end of June.

The Kansas Senate is considering a resolution condemning a recent Obama administration decree that public schools allow transgender students to use the restrooms that match their gender identity, not their sex at birth.

The nonbinding resolution comes less than a week after the state Supreme Court ruled that legislators failed to equitably fund the school’s 286 public school districts. Justices warned that public schools will be unable to open in August if legislators don’t pass a measure by June 30 that adequately funds poor school districts. Opponents of the measure contend that it serves as a distraction on the last day of the annual session.

‘Resign in shame’: Fed-up Kansas CEO flees GOP governor’s disastrous reign

A tech CEO blamed Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and his ultra-conservative policies for his decision to move his company — and its jobs — to another state.

“It’s not so much that I’m moving the company to Missouri as I’m moving it away from Kansas,” said Jeff Blackwood, CEO of Pathfinder Health Innovations.

Blackwood, whose privately held company provides software to autism therapy centers, wrote a blistering attack of Brownback and the Republican-dominated legislature — which he said had destroyed the state’s economy with failed conservative policies.

“Kansas has become a test center of ‘trickle down’ economics, espoused by economist Arthur Laffer during the Reagan years,” Blackwood wrote in a personal post on the company’s blog. “Nowhere has there been as thorough an implementation of Laffer’s policy recommendations — and nowhere has there been as dramatic a failure of government.”

“I believe that it is the responsibility of business owners and people with some voice in society should speak up against these destructive policies,” Blackwood said. “And I believe it is far past the time that Sam Brownback and his cronies admit the damage they’ve caused to the people of Kansas and resign in the shame they deserve.”

The White House said late Wednesday President Trump will nominate Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R) to serve as an ambassador at large for international religious freedom.

Brownback, a devout Catholic, would be the fifth person to run the State Department's Office of International Religious Freedom -- an office first created by legislation Brownback sponsored when he was a member of the Senate back in 1998.

Brownback would be the second person to run the office who was not previously a member of the clergy. John Hanford, who ran the office under George W. Bush, was a Presbyterian minister. President Obama nominated a Baptist pastor and a rabbi to head the office.

If confirmed, Brownback would leave the state in the hands of Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer (R), who has already been considering his own bid for governor in 2018.

Maybe this will get him out of Kansas for a while.

But now, Brownback will be U.S. America’s new “ambassador at large for international religious freedom,” a position that has actually been around since 1998. Here’s a fun fact: in 1998, Sam Brownback was in Congress, and he voted for the bill that created the ambassadorship. Under the usual bluster and BS, this started as a thread about Kansas, where farms have been draining the aquifer. They are constantly drilling deeper to get water, which is rapidly becoming more expensive with the rising cost of energy to drill holes and pump water. Finally the wells will be dry, the farms will be abandoned, and there won't be much left of Kansas, like most of the prairie states. Rainfall may be enough to sustain some free grazing, not fenced ranching. The educational model of town schools will need a complete reinvention for a mostly migrant population.
