I successfully got brand new strings on it over the holidays. But a recognizable tune? No. Not yet.
I am a classically trained violinist... some days I think that ought to make mastering the dulcimer easier, but in fact, I think it makes it more difficult. I have trouble unclenching and chord charts seem utterly unintelligible to me

I have an old small banjo that was handed down in the family. I have no idea who played it

Most people find the mountain Dulcimer one of the easier instruments to learn. So I'd definitely assume it's trying to apply what you already know to it. My advice is listen to the words of Yoda "unlearn what you have learned"

I think this is pretty good advice. Hence my comment about needing to unclench. Sometimes I'm an uptight opinionated difficult cunt.

Unlearning when you’re classically trained is next to impossible!
I bet you’re incredible to listen to. Pianist here, and trying to learn the ukelele. Im lazy/distractable though
