Electricity doesn't HAVE to be generated by fossil fuels, but it's the cheapest and cleanest energy we have. It's more reliable compared to wind/solar and environmentally safer than nuclear.

There is an offshore wind farm near my house. Since it was first installed, the output from the original 30 turbines has trebled, and more have been added. I can now see SIX offshore wind farms from my house. Together they supply electrcity to meet most of the needs of SE England when the wind blows. It doesn't blow on fewer than five days a year.

Whether fossil fuels are the cheapest electricity really depends on the specific market. In general, that's no longer the case. In many markets, there's a reason why renewables are the growth sector they are, and coal and oil are not. There's also a good argument to be made that nuclear energy is significantly better for the environment than fossil.

Fossil fuels require the crude oil marketplace to be stable. Something it currently is not due to political manipulation from the current US Administration.

Otherwise, energy from fossil fuels reigns supreme in cost per watt when compared to electricity by more than a small margin.

Whether emerging technologies change that will depend on whether fossil fuels continue to be price volatile and alt energy becoming more capable of sustaining adequate electrical generation during poor weather conditions. The wind doesn't always blow, and the sun is sometimes occluded, but oil/gas always burns.

The Greenies can't support nuclear, they already declared it to be anathema and an unforgivable sin against nature and the planet.

Green energy currently does not work. If it did, then there wouldn't be an energy shortage in the UK and Europe. There wouldn't be issues with migratory birds dying in massive numbers from the electrical fields. Usually a solar-only system can deliver electricity for about $0.10/kWh for an owner-financed system. If you want to shut off the genset completely and build your own microgrid with storage, that unit cost increases to about $0.25/kWh – still considerably less than the cost of a genset burning fossil fuel.

Those are just 2 links with information. There's a lot more out there and almost all of the newest stuff shows lower costs but those lower cost numbers include some kind of "social adjustment" for fossil fuels to change the numbers to favor renewables. Take out the adjustments and what you get are the base numbers which show that solar is about $2.50/KwH and fossil fuels are around $0.15/KwH.

If it were otherwise the fossil fuel industry would collapse overnight.
