This really happened to everybody on the Titanic after the last lifeboats were gone and about 1,500 people were left on the decks. I guess about half of them understood that they were doomed - certainly the crew knew, including Captain Smith and Thomas Andrews.

They stood around, listened to the band, then ran to the stern as the ship went down. By that point they were scared, of course. But: "I want people to know that I died like a gentleman," says one character in A Night to Remember.

It could never happen, but what would modern Americans do on a cruise ship in the same situation? There might be some very wild craziness, I guess.

Andrews knew from the beginning what was happening and that there weren't enough lifeboats. Yet people who saw him that night say that he remained quite calm and composed through the whole event.
