I had to learn to recite that, in the original Middle English (or is it Old English?) for AP English in high school. I'm still wondering what was the educational value of stumbling through a poem in what amounted to a different language from the one we were studying.

Middle. Beowulf is Old English -- sounds like the Swedish Chef on The Muppet Show and for good historical reasons.

I guess the educational value is historical. The Canterbury Tales is just about the only literary picture we have of the culture and daily life of medieval England below the level of royalty.
