How am I supposed to handle a rejected story?

It was in my sent back section with a message explaining the violating part of the story. So I deleted it from the sent back section and re-submitted it as a new story with the violating parts removed. However I'm wondering if this is not how I was supposed to go about it? Would it have been faster or more proper to have edited the story in the sent back section? Also I wasn't even sure if it would let me edit since I sent it as a file and not text. I'm just a bit worried because my first story ever was reviewed and published within 24 hours and this story was reviewed and sent back in a similar time frame. But now the edited story I sent as new has taken about 4 days and still not approved. Sorry I know I should just keep waiting but it's hard but I'm worried I may have done something wrong. Like maybe it looks I just resubmitted it without changing anything but I did fix it and I put it in the submission notes. But yeah I'll probably just keep waiting.

You did the right thing. The only other thing I'd advise is that you put a note to the editor with your new version, explaining what you did.

Your changes may not be enough, in which case you're likely to get another chance.

Resubmits/edits always take a while, but since you effectively started over again with a new story, you've joined the normal queue. Which can be up to a week for new writers, particularly if the story has been rejected once already - it's got to get through all of the vetting hurdles again.

Your 24 hour frame of reference was unusual, it's more often 2 - 3 days for seasoned writers, longer for new writers..

I'll just keep waiting then. I don't think I'll message Laurel, I'll just keep waiting patiently and trust the system. Also really it's my fault for getting too close to violating the sites rules. I'll steer very clear of them in the future so that this doesn't need to happen again.

My first story (submitted only last month) took 4 days, then was rejected. I fixed it and resubmitted; again it took 4 days. Ever since then, though, it's taken only 2 days - although I haven't had another rejection yet to compare with.

Hope this helps.

I used the sent back section to resubmit a rejected story after an edit. It stayed in pending for about six days. I had a similar experience with another story last year, stuck in pending, for an inordinate amount of time, after resubmission. I sent a note to Manu in both cases, and posting occurred within a few days. Two other stories, I submitted in the past couple of weeks, were rejected. I decided not to resubmit them, as I couldn't think of an edit that could make them presentable.

For anyone who comes back to this later, I waited and eventually the submission did progress but was rejected again for a different reason lol. Which is okay, it's my fault ultimately for not following the submission guidelines entirely. I will promise to follow them more strictly from now on. But yeah the lesson is if you're patient eventually the submission will progress. It wasn't necessary for me to contact Laurel and I'm glad I didn't. I imagine Laurel has enough to deal with already and doesn't need me to hassle them just cause I'm impatient. But yeah if your story is taking longer than usual it's probably just a slump that will pass.

Yeah I also had to edit my most recent submission and take an entire plot point out because it was deemed to be a violation. Although in my opinion it was quite tame and very much an innocent action done when growing up. Sucks because I think it added alot to the story but it's okay. At the end of the day it's not my site so all I can do is follow the rules. I don't really feel it's my right to complain about it, instead I'll write the rules in mind. Also have a story I'm working on that again, I don't think is fully violating the guidelines, but I know it's just too close to possibly be approved as a submission so I won't even try. Just the way it is. I still love this site and will keep posting other stories though.

One of my stories The Vixen Agency: Julie was rejected and it was only because of one word. Raped.

https://www.literotica.com/s/the-vixen-agency-julie

I had written “My sister was raped.” I changed it to “My sister was forced to have sex against her will.”

I gave quite a detailed foreword:

His sister was beaten up and physically violated and now he wants retribution on her behalf. The man got away with it because he was rich. Will the agency help him? They have the facilities. They have the means. They can do what he wants. Will they do it? Or will they turn him down?

This story is about justice. There is no scene in this story of the sister being forced to have sex against her will. It is only referred to as the reason for him wanting the perpetrator taught a lesson he will never forget, to show him what it's like to be violated against your will, and to stop him ever attacking a woman again. To violate a woman in this way is an act I personally think is unforgivable and the punishment I would mete out would be much more severe than the courts do.

Originally the first sentence of the foreword was “My sister was beaten up and raped…”. I changed it to “sexually violated.”

Rejected although I had stated in bold type, not italics, that there was no scene of rape in the story. Maybe it was just technology which picked it up not Laurel actually reading it.

Whatever the reason I made the minor changes and it went though without a problem.

Similarly, perhaps with the two stories of yours which were rejected the reason was so simple you’ve overlooked it. But if you have written a good story don’t give up. There’s only one reason not to resubmit and that’s if altering it makes the story pointless.

That's good advice. The resubmit was successful for similar reasons your submission went through. Just a simple edit of a few words only slightly altering the tone of the story. In my case, the character in question had dark thoughts since her teens. All I had to do was remove "since her teens" and the story went through. The problem with the two rejected stories are characters engaging in actions, both involving sex, that cause the death of other characters. That qualified as "snuff" according to the moderator, something I resented. The first story, the characters' actions were designed to illustrate their evil nature, especially in contrast to their victim, a good, kindhearted young man. The second story, illustrated the change in the main character, and her transformation into a monster, visiting retribution on one of the characters responsible for her transformation.

Edits in these cases would require more than a few words, and I fear the tone would change, reducing the impact of their actions. Both were supposed to be in the Erotic Horror category, and while there's erotic, there also horror. Plus I've read published erotic horror by writers far better than I, more extreme than what I wrote. As well as stuff on Literotica posted, that seemed, qualitatively, little different from from the two stories I wrote. It might be a fit of pique on my part, but I wonder if the moderator would prefer erotic discomfort rather than erotic horror.

Oh, and thanks :)

Sens a message to Laurel and ask her about it.
How do you "send a message to Laurel?"

I, too, had a story rejected some time after it was posted. But I don't know how to find out why it was rejected. Where should I look?

I'm actually scared after reading it.
I have story that I'm planning to publish soon about a guy who was raped. Its mentioned as a incident from thee past.
There is also mentioning about the other MC's sister who shared similar fate and was raped and killed.
The story is not however about rapes, but healing after such events.
The two people got together and heal and help each other.
Kind of HURT TO COMFORT type of story.

Are you telling me I have a big chance that my story will be rejected? :O

In the rejection notice on your Control Panel - it will show up as Returned, with a reason for rejection (usually couched as a series of questions - there are a set of generic rejection notices, for each of the half dozen or so reasons).

The rape rule is, the victim must eventually find pleasure from the act, especially if it's described in detail.

You might get away with a simple statement, provided you don't elaborate. Submit the story, you'll soon find out.
