On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher criticized people who have attempted to make the Russian invasion of Ukraine about their pet issues and criticized those who have attempted to blame the invasion on former President Donald Trump by asking, “if Putin thought Trump was really that supportive of him, why didn’t he invade when Trump was in office?” And arguing that the question’s worth asking “if you’re not locked into one, intransigent thought.”

Yeah, I covered this a bit ago in a thread.

Putin wasn't fearful of Trump...he used him to further his long term goals and he also wanted to see if 45 would undo more of the US relationship with NATO. 45 was a useful idiot to Putin.

Putin sees half of his long time enemies in the US as in shambles right now. He sees the GOP in disarray and falling apart. They were traditionally as opposed to Putin as democrats we're in the past. That has changed. The GOP is now in support of Putin and Xi.

Putin fears the Dems now....but, he also saw his opportunity. While the Dems are in charge, anything that goes badly for the USA will be blamed on them. This will favor getting the GOP back into power in the midterms and the general election. Putin would like to have his GOP allies back.

Bolton explained this. At the time, it looked to Putin like Trump was going to get everything done he wanted done and he wouldn't have to get his hands dirty. Trump certainly did do everything that Putin wanted done--Trump just wasn't, thank God, the only element of the American system going at the time.

Also, Putin thought Trump would be re-elected, and that they would be toasting each other again in early November of 2020. Putin underestimated Biden then, and he did it again recently.

Can an intellectually honest person even conceive of Trump working with NATO and other countries to economically isolate Putin?
