The OP is correct with regard to airborne respiratory viruses such as Covid 19. Decades of research substantiate this. Surgical masks are not intended to prevent the spread of airborne respiratory viruses. They are intended to prevent infections transmitted by bodily fluids (blood, bile, saliva, vomit, urine, mucus, etc) during surgical procedures which involve exposed open wounds. That’s why they are called surgical masks.
