About their history of spreading disinformation about climate change.

The heads of major oil companies will make a historic appearance before Congress on Thursday to answer accusations that their firms have spent years lying about the climate crisis.

For the first time, the top executives from the US’s largest oil company, ExxonMobil, as well as Shell, Chevron and BP will be questioned under oath about the industry’s long campaign to discredit and deny the evidence that burning fossil fuels drove global heating.

A leading critic of the petroleum industry behind the hearing by the House oversight committee, Representative Ro Khanna, said the executives’ testimony has the potential to be as significant as the 1994 congressional hearing at which the heads of the big tobacco companies were confronted with the question of whether they knew nicotine was addictive.

<snip>

“They’ve got a very tricky balance. They either have to admit certain wrongdoing or they run the risk of lying under oath. If I were them, I would come in with more of a mea culpa approach and acknowledge what they’ve done wrong,” he said.

“It’ll be a turning point for them. It could be the big tobacco moment. We’ve never had a situation where the big oil executives have to answer under oath for their company’s behaviour.”

And thus the lefts campaign to silence anyone who disagrees with their political agenda begins.

The (D) narrative on climate going forward:

"Censorship of MISINFORMATION isn't speech censorship!! Free speech is TOTALLY censored for things leftist don't like!! That's what makes it free speech!!!"

Don't jump the gun -- the hearings don't start until Thursday. We don't know what they'll lead to.

Of course there should be penalties for spreading disinformation that harms society. Rep. Khanna refers to this by linking this to earlier Congressional investigations of the tobacco industry. But, that's not censorship. It's correcting the record.

Don't jump the gun

I didn't, you're literally doing exactly what I said :D

You're proving my prediction, as is the news, and office holding democrats no doubt will in the coming weeks...as is their stated goal.

Of course there should be penalties for spreading disinformation

I know you hat civil rights and free speech.

That's what makes you so un-American.

Free speech =/= speech with impunity, it only means no prior restraint.

No, free speech is free.

All your justifications for your censorship are whatever.....censorship is anti-free speech.

There are all kinds of perfectly constitutional ways that your speech can get you in trouble. That's as much a part of the system as the 1A itself.

A: Argument by picture.

Q: What do you engage in when you do not possess
the intellectual capacity to formulate a cogent argument?

Next week, physicists will be grilled by Congress on physical therapy remedies...

;) ;)

Yep, give the 'cancel culture' a gavel and they turn into tyrants (they always were Fascists).

Anyway, they'll try to use this hearing to gin up support with their 'true believer's' and pretend that they speak for all of humanity when the reality is that 'Climate Change' isn't on the top ten list of voter concerns and general public knows that the POS in the white house along with the climate hand wringers are responsible for the huge jump in energy prices, not the energy companies.

So we, the public, will point and laugh while a group of piss-ant congress critters wastes their time and our money on shit that barely registers on any poll.

As long as they are doing that instead of enacting legislation, it's all good.

:)

Sure.... and given the power (D)'eez are going to make a fucking shitload of more ways your speech can get you in trouble, including disagreeing with anything they tell you.

Because you're a bunch of anti-free speech authoritarians. :)

Democrats when they were liberal, vs today.

Good point.....if we're lucky they'll pass some of those "progressive" policies in their big states like CA and NY so we can all point and laugh.

Yo Housesquaw, a few userids ago you promoted your own personal fallacy of "ad hominem by class" which you argued that "freedom of speech" implied "freedom from criticism". Do you still believe that happy horseshit?

Can't do nuttin' at the state level that will help significantly with climate change.

Democrats when they were liberal, vs today.

If we go back to the most recent time when the Democratic party was substantially different from what it is now, that was also a time when it included powerful white-supremacist elements. Is that your idea of "liberal"?

You make this same ascription against anyone who doesn't toe the most anti-American freedom hating "progressive" line possible.

Do you have anything to support your claim that he argued freedom of speech implied freedom from criticism or are you still just a cheap liar?? :D

Sure you can, by doing your part. Many states like CA and NY have alredy demonstrated this.

No, and that's actually what they've reverted back to, basic racist. Which FDR super was, and infinitely so by todays (D) standards, but he was still politically liberal in most cases, which is something the Democrats have totally thrown out as of 2016.

As for being racist they've just pointed their bigotry at white (and white enough i.e. anyone who doesn't agree with them) people, especially males.

You must understand that there cannot be any such thing as continuity between white supremacist racism and the form of racism you are making up.

He doesn't. That's why he thinks acknowledging that the parties switched places on civil rights in the '60s means the Republicans also get credit for every good thing Democrats did before then.

What he actually seems to be trying to say -- over and over and over -- is that the Dems were a racist party and did not essentially change, but simply changed the target of their racism from blacks to whites. Which makes even less sense than the "Democrat plantation" bullshit.

Just a point en passant. I love the meme about the oil companies making "obscene profits." The oil companies have a net profit margin of 6.2% to 6.8%, and that margin has pretty much been a constant for decades now. As an industry they run in the middle of the pack re. NPM's.

You might want to look up those industries with the highest profit margins, you may find some surprises there.
