couple of suspects hunted after firing around 10 shots outside the apartment building this little 8-year old girl was visiting (her aunt's), killing her and a horse, one of several kept there for children to pet.

they keep a bunch of horses and a few other animals there for kids to pet... i'd imagine the two suspects were probably intent on shooting up the animals to frighten people. The kid being there might not have been seen by them, or seen and it just didn't matter to them. Likeliest scenario, the shooters were drunk or high and thought it'd be funny. A darker scenario is one already mentioned...they were there to do deliberate damage (for intimidation/hate) and a child didn't make any difference to them.
