Trump endorses Hungary's Viktor Orban.

Donald Trump has handed out a slew of political endorsements ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. He delivered another big one on Monday, officially lending his support to … Hungarian Prime Minister and ascendant autocrat Viktor Orban.

“Viktor Orban of Hungary truly loves his Country and wants safety for his people,” the former president wrote. “He has done a powerful and wonderful job in protecting Hungary, stopping illegal immigration, creating jobs, trade, and should be allowed to continue to do so in the upcoming election. He is a strong leader and is respected by all. He has my Complete support and Endorsement for reelection as Prime Minister!”

It’s pretty strange for a former president to go out of his way to endorse the incumbent Hungarian prime minister, especially Orban, a far-right authoritarian who has openly bashed democracy. The New York Times noted on Sunday that Orban is so illiberal that it’s become something of a crisis within the European Union, and that the European Court of Justice is currently mulling whether to allow the union to restrict Hungary’s funding as the Hungarian prime minister works to undercut freedom of the press, the rule of law, and human rights.

Trump has long been a fan, though. He invited Orban at the White House in 2019, a move that drew condemnation from both sides of the aisle (this was back when Republicans felt they could selectively criticize Trump). The meeting went on as planned, though, with a U.S.-based Hungarian lobbyist describing it to Rolling Stone as a “grand slam” for the autocrat. “You’re respected all over Europe,” Trump told Orban during the sit-down. “Probably like me a little bit controversial, but that’s okay. You’ve done a good job and you’ve kept your country safe.”

Trump and the right wingers love authoritarian dictators.

Strangely, they love them even if they're Communist. See, e.g., Trump and Xi, Trump and Kim Jong-un. (Though NK is no longer Communist in its official ideology, strictly speaking.)

I guess we can add "don't make endorsements in foreign elections" to the list of things Donald Trump doesn't know a world leader isn't supposed to do. To be fair, he's not the first one: that's why George W.M.D. Bush fell for the claim that Canada's "Prime Minister Poutine" had endorsed him.

Anyone that thinks that Orabn is anything but an authoritarian piece of shit, believes in fairy tails

There are bound to be some Americans who admire Orban just for his border-control policies.

"I'm back!" The line echoes like the words spoken in the alien invasion movie Independence Day.

Trump had glowing words when he met his idol, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, at Mar-a-Lago. It was billed as a social gathering that included a one-hour private session with top Trump team members. Orbán arrived outside of regular diplomatic channels; he was invited by Trump but did not request a formal meeting with President Biden per normal protocol.

During the private member’s only entertainment session, Trump praised the prime minister, saying, "He's a noncontroversial figure because he says, 'This is the way it's going to be,' and that's the end of it. Right? He's the boss."

According to The Associated Press, European nations are intensely scrutinizing Orbán for transforming Hungary into an autocratic system. “There are allegations of rolling back minority rights, seizing control of the judiciary and media, and manipulating the country's election system to remain in power.”

Do Trump’s remarks sound familiar? Do they appear similar to those during an attempted power grab in America? Voters, please keep in mind Trump’s words about what he will do on day one if elected. Those words sound like Trump thinking, 'This is the way it's going to be,' and that's the end of it. Right? I’m the boss.’
