I'm going with Sharp Shinned Hawk. I guess I'll need to start putting some meat in the bird feed. :)

I think that's a Cooper's hawk. The bane of my squirrel hunting season this year.

I was thinking Coopers at first but I think they have red eyes. I am amazed at the amount of pleasure it brings. Explains the billion dollar bird feed industry.

I throw an ear of field corn out for the one squirrel who decided to live in the old silver maple. Sometimes it sits on one side and the hawk on the other. :)

Do they have a high pitched screech and travel in pairs? I have a pair of something around here, but never see them close enough to get a good look.

High pitched shriek- yes, but it's hard to hear from inside. It can see me standing at the window and yells at me. Never seen 2 at the same time but it wouldn't surprise me. :)

Every time I think my life sucks...I remember a cardinal, legs up, being eviscerated by a Cooper's.

That usually cures me.

I get some occasional cardinals. You meant the bird right, not the clergyman? :)

The first real cold front of the year arrived yesterday. It's been a non-stop feeding frenzy out there all morning.

You know what's fun if you have a picture window? Put a bowl of birdseed on the sill outside it for six days. On the seventh, move the bowl to the sill inside! :)

You don't even need birdseed -- they like bread. I used to live on a lake. When there was stale bread to be got rid of, I went out on the dock -- within a minute, there were half a dozen species of birds feeding.

" Bread and similar products such as crackers, rolls, chips, crisps, donuts, crusts, cereal, and popcorn are great sources of carbohydrates, but they offer little nutritional value for ducks, geese, swans, and other birds. In fact, bread is the equivalent of junk food for birds. Just like humans would suffer from a diet of nothing but candy and sugar, too much bread can lead ducks to obesity and malnutrition as well as many other problems.

Offered as a rare treat in extreme moderation, bread is not immediately harmful to ducks or birds, but that moderation is hard to judge.2 While one person or family may only feed the ducks once every few months, there may be many other families and individuals who are feeding the ducks bread far more frequently. Adding all these well-meaning feeders together can lead to a diet based almost solely on unhealthy bread products. Environmentally conscious birders will stop offering any bread or bread-like products to ducks to avoid nutritional problems and other issues caused by a carbohydrate-rich diet. "

A few years ago they started handing out little bags of birdseed to throw at the bride and groom at weddings, out of fear that if the traditional (raw, dry) rice were thrown, birds would eat it, and it would swell up dangerously inside them.

I don't know if there is any real danger there or not.

We get enough of that fun from the cardinals who see their reflection,
not to mention the birds who fly into it never seeing a reflection.
I also have had to cover car and truck mirrors to prevent
them from beating themselves silly/bloody...

Ann,

I have heaters that keep water from freezing for my chickens and the birds,
but the wild ones don't really need it because is there is any wind,
our ponds don't get cold enough to freeze over.
I do need to get some suet though.

:)
