And not just because they made so many bad choices in how to advance the narrative, or what parts of the story they decided to favor over others -- but the whole "He is the one" mythological storyline was overripe even when the novel was written. Happily there is no problem with revisiting ancient archetypes and motifs if you bring something fresh to them, as the book(s) did. But the movie(s) sit in the spectacle and the Messiah-complex too readily, too comfortably, too exclusively, to the detriment of the truly novel aspects of the story.
