And not just because they made so many bad choices in how to advance the narrative, or what parts of the story they decided to favor over others -- but the whole "He is the one" mythological storyline was overripe even when the novel was written. Happily there is no problem with revisiting ancient archetypes and motifs if you bring something fresh to them, as the book(s) did. But the movie(s) sit in the spectacle and the Messiah-complex too readily, too comfortably, too exclusively, to the detriment of the truly novel aspects of the story.

Can't wait for the next remake in 25 years.

Pity bump.

I liked the 2000 miniseries on SyFy.

There is an urban legend about a 1984 adaptation by David Lynch, of all people, but of course that does not exist.

Wait, books as in plural? I’ve been refusing to see the movie(s) until I read the book but but if it’s a series then I’m out.

He just posts out of his ass and hopes for correction and any interaction from board folks. Which you did, thanks.

Wiki snippet:
Herbert wrote five sequels: Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. Following Herbert's death in 1986, his son Brian Herbert and author Kevin J. Anderson continued the series in over a dozen additional novels since 1999.

Which is like shooting one's self with a semi auto using the entire magazine full.

And yet, I'm right and you're wrong -- again. lol

Are you sure? Just because you have been here since the beginning of time, doesn't mean you are right. Most of the time, people just give you a pass like they would for their grandpa.

The books are a magnificent cluster fuck penned by a master clusterfucker. If the movie turns out to be a clusterfuck, what the fuck did you expect? I got HBO MAX just in time to miss seeing it. :)

I found the movie quite boring. I even dozed off…which is easier to do when streaming at home. I have not read the books, but may give them a try. I’m always curious about the books, films, and shows that amass a cult following.

I want a new drug!

Melange (/meɪˈlɑːnʒ/[1]), often referred to as "the spice", is the fictional psychedelic drug central to the Dune series of science fiction novels by Frank Herbert and derivative works.

In the series, the most essential and valuable commodity in the universe is melange, a drug that gives the user a longer life span, greater vitality, and heightened awareness; it can also unlock prescience in some humans, depending upon the dosage and the consumer's physiology. This prescience-enhancing property makes safe and accurate interstellar travel possible. However, melange is also highly addictive, and withdrawal is fatal. Harvesting melange is also hazardous in the extreme, as its only known source is the harsh desert planet Arrakis, and melange deposits are guarded by giant sandworms.

I recall stumbling upon the film mid-presentation. I watched, and waited for something to happen. Nothing did, so I selected something else to watch.

Villeneuve is an expert film maker and this movie was a good effort. It follows the book pretty faithfully, so if you are a fan of the book, do go and see the movie.

I will buy the dvd when it comes out as I do need to watch it again. Right now, I do think that his Blade Runner 2049 is a better overall SciFi movie, but I do think when part 2 comes out, the Dune movie will be looked at as a really good Sci Fi genre movie.

Also, if you are a SciFi fan, do watch Arrival, another movie by Villeneuve that is quite good.

Did I fuck your sister?

And yeah, I'm sure. I'm right. You're wrong. Let the double rainbows form.

i heard it was long and involved right after it came out. subsequent reviews weren’t great. i have not seen it. i have not read the book either. i should have. it’s been on the list for a long time. i just haven’t.

I'd rather see a remake that's a mix between Dune and a new Han Solo movie. Han could be doing a spice run and meet Paul Antreides.

Frank Herbert expected poor desert dwellers to become more prominent in geopolitics. Oil = spice is the TLDR version. There is also the role of poverty and adversity in making people more ready for the world's changes.

The Empire-wide "Jihad" Paul envisions would not be possible because the Fremen are not numerous enough. A desert planet cannot support a large population.

No. YOU suck. (And you know you do.)

You cannot state it right within your complaint that you’re biased against an “overripe” mythology and then call the narrative shitty. It ain’t for you then. Not at all objective.

I might agree that they failed to really… um… capitalize nor advance on any of that. The narrative was completely empty (much like the visual approach at large).

But I DO think those visuals count.

And the pacing, obeyed it.

I do not often see that sort of patience these days. It wasn’t completely reliant on the “wow” factor, they wove it in. It worked, artistically, on the eyeball. As a whole.

These days - mate - I think that might be enough for me.

What the fuck else has even offered an effort like that besides the remake of A Star is Born?

I’m good with it.

The Nerf Herder of Dune

Fuck, man. Speaking of failure to advance. That's still who you are?

Get on a bike, bro. Peddle.

Put down your 20.

Quad it.

(I don't know numbers beyond multiples of four so I can't quite go to 100.)
