The Wheel of Time is currently playing on Amazon Prime. It's a limited series based upon the high fantasy books of Robert Jordan. I haven't read the books but I have watched the first episode on Prime. Right now I'm still thinking about it but overall I enjoyed watching it and will watch the next. The cast and sets are really good.

Is anyone else here currently watching it? If so what are your thoughts?

OK, the second episode's pretty good as well. It's not LOTR or GOT-themed but there are monsters, magic, and fighting. I think anyone who's watched the above two or the Narnia Chronicles would probably like this material.

I have read the books, though a long time ago & I never actually finished the series, and plan to check it out. I wonder what “limited series” means? The series got pretty convoluted and I think the author didn’t even know how to wrap it all up… then of course he died before he did

Limited series is what I thought I'd read, which would mean only a small number of episodes. But Wiki said it's supposed to run for three seasons so who knows

It’ll be interesting to see how they fit 14 very long books into only three seasons even!

Three episodes in now, it looks like it will be next Friday before more are available. The mix of Asian and European weapons and clothing, as well as actors, is curious. I don't know how it plays out in the WOT book series.

Overall, the female characters are very prominent as magical as well as combatants. I haven't figured out if this is a matriarchal society yet or what.

To some extent it is, in the books, (I think they describe this in the show too) There was a massive war and the Male Channelers were sort of cursed by the Dark One, who put a Taint in the male half of the Source. So men got a really bad reputation and a lot of the societies that rebuilt were female led.

A lot of the details from the books haven't yet been talked about in the show. I'm looking forward to the next episodes to really make up my mind. I really like the set design and the costumes. Some stuff has been changed so far.

I recommend it highly. :)

Ah! Very cool, that makes sense and offers some insight. Thanks, Nevyn.

I like some fantasy writing but once they go beyond a trilogy I'm ready for something else. I think that Lewis and Tolkien spoiled me on that.

I started reading the Wheel of Time back in the early 90s and I loved them to be honest. It has all the great fantasy stuff, a group of young people setting out from their safe and familiar lives, into a big world full of wonder and danger.

I loved the books until Jordan kind of lost the thread and got caught in his own trap. As a writer, I've done that, and ended up not finishing the story. In his case some might have been due to his health issues, but I also think he kept it going for the money. Just like George RR Martin with a Song of Ice and Fire.

I must say Sanderson finished it well enough. The world they created was and is a great one though and I will enjoy seeing it on the screen.

I admit I only made it through about five or maybe seven of the books before I gave 'em up. And those a long, long time ago.

But, yeah. I think I'll check this out. Thanks! I hadn't had any idea it was even a thing.

Episode 4 is watched now. There sure is a Central Asian Buddhism, Hinduism, And Sikhism. theme going on the reincarnation thing. Does this have anything to do with the casting demographics?

I loved the mix of wagons used by the gypsy-type people. Those were a mix of Basque sheepherder wagons and such.

What about the costuming/clothing, is that described in the books along with dialects?

I felt the same way about some of the late middle books when I first read them. When I did a reread knowing where it was going a lot of the muddle made sense. I really enjoyed the reread, and thought well of all of the books.

I won't be watching the Amazon series. There a lot of emphasis on sex. The books were really fairly innocent in that way. From what I've read, they have the same character names, and similar story arc and everything else is in the opinion of the writers is what Jordan should have written. NO THANKS. I fear that if LOTR hadn't been made into movies a while ago, there would be an attempt to inject sex in it as well. Think about that.

I'm on Lit, so pretty clearly I don't have a problem with sex.
