Independents left the Democrats 2:1 in Virginia yesterday giving Trump a resounding victory. Why? Because of Biden's inability to lead. President Joe Biden's "Build Back Better" plan was pitched as a once-in-a-generation rebalancing of America's socioeconomic scales. Democrats were going to "Tax The Rich" and use the proceeds to fund a massive expansion of government benefits for everyone else.

Now, the package appears likely to deliver an overall tax cut for America's wealthiest citizens.

In large part, that's because Democrats now plan to fully repeal a cap on the state and local tax (SALT) deduction. The cap, imposed as part of the 2017 federal tax reform law, allows Americans to deduct up to $10,000 in state and local tax payments from their federal taxes. That cap is high enough that it covers the vast majority of Americans, but the changes made in 2017 meant that wealthy Americans could no longer take advantage of a sort of backdoor subsidy that eased the burden of living in a high-tax state or locality.

There's no way around it: Removing the SALT cap is a huge tax break for a small number of very wealthy Americans. According to the Tax Policy Center, only about 9 percent of households will see any benefit from repealing the cap. The wealthiest 1 percent of American households will receive 56 percent of the benefits.

The message (which I doubt has been lost on Trump, even though it has on you) is that Republicans can win by giving Trump just a bit of early lipservice (to pin down Trump's dummy base) and then keep Trump the hell away from most of the campaign. That's the template that Youngkin handed to other Republicans, and that isn't a template that bodes well for Trump's political future. (He'll probably be in prison anyway.)

The country's not going to split apart. That would require too much effort on too many people's part. How long have you been following U.S. politics?

I hope that the Build Back Better legislation will cause the entire thing to collapse. I hope that this is the straw that breaks the camel's back and that we all get a nice, long look at the abject failure of government.
