Primarily because it works, seemingly.
I'm a busy man. Not just the writing, but real life. And I appreciate when readers tell my they like my style. It means a lot to me. I take commissions, yes, they help me to continue eating and living.
Then there's the one who ask for me to give them a huge story gratis. And sorry, no, that ain't happening. First, not fair to people who pay me for stories, and secondly, I don't have the time for the free work requests. The stories I'm working on here are what I can get away with doing right now, and even that's a stretch.
But damned if these people don't put ideas in my head that I can't stop thinking about. I'm tempted to steal them, make them my own and publish them, lol.
95% of the time, the ideas are nothing original, just their desired story type in my prose and my unique twists on things. And then there's the 5% who present me with an idea where I reeeeally wanna have a go at it one day.
One guy wants a freebie and it's tempting. He also wants 100k words, which instakills the idea. Sorry. But wow, fun idea. Lol.
For you folks who do commissions, what's your wackiest freebie request? I know you're out there, it can't just be me. There's a lot more established and better authors than me on here.
