I think you're reading things into that scene that just aren't there. His friends do look a bit surprised at first, but at the end of the ad they hug him. Not a likely response from people who are feeling offended at anything he said.

Surely the popularity of traditional black music depends on who’s playing it. White people don’t listen to black music until white people like Elvis, The Beatles, Paul Simon or The Police make records of it.

Even the most loyal progressives mostly have somewhere they draw the line on being "woke", and this (along with the idea that power differentials are a get out of jail free card for being an asshole) is where I draw mine. I love Elvis and the Beatles, and I love the black music that influenced them, but to me they are two completely different categories. They didn't copy or appropriate black music, they had their own styles that were influenced by it but distinct from it. Not to mention a LOT of black artists had hits on the pop (read white) charts in the '50s and '60s, to the point where Billboard actually abolished its R&B chart at one point because most weeks it was about the same as the pop charts. I don't care much for The Police but I'm inclined to make the same argument: they were influenced by reggae, but overall their style wasn't reggae as such.

I can't bring myself to write a defense of Paul Simon, both because of the way he screwed his South African collaborators and for performing there pre-1991. But I will say he brought a lot of well-deserved recognition to Ladysmith Black Mambazo that they otherwise never would have gotten.

Thus, they are a new market which advertising demography needs to understand. Young men with money are old hat and the advertisers worked out what made them tick years ago.

The snowflakes managed to ban Ben and Jemima from advertising because it was 'exploitative.' But if it's on TV I guess it's just fine.

I've seen a smattering of those ads here and there. Most of the ones I saw were selling shit, worthless shit. If they can exploit those minorities to to buy their worthless shit, more power to them.
