Muslims are required by their faith do give away 15% of all the wealth they create.....maybe this could be a way to pay indigenous peoples of North America back....instead of paying federal tax to a blouted military we use that money to pay back indigenous folks.

I went to the woodlands today to see my ancestors...how about you?

Maybe you can lead by example. Just like Confederates are losers, so are the Indians. The history of humanity is one of struggle and the conquerors that were here lost to European conquerors who were better at conquering. Guess what, you're part of it.

The only reason we have Columbus Day is that Italian-Americans wanted their own St. Patrick's Day. It has nothing to do with honoring the achievements of Columbus.

No one said it was a good code. It was a lousy code, but it's how the world worked. It happened and nothing is going to change that. We have some people running around thinking we can undo it.

Not the point and not what's happening.

Not/no longer paying tribute to it is not pretending to undo or erase the shit parts of history, it's making the future society better starting in the now and in all of the future nows to happen for as long as society can be better. By teaching history's verity instead of revisionist fantasies and not revering the shit people who created and enabled those very lousy codes that made the world work that way.

"Manifest Destiny" used to be considered something positive once upon a time. It is a fundamentally good thing that it's not anymore.

Columbus was Spanish Catalain, not Italian, and he never set foot on North America.

But otherwise, great holiday!

In fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

Here’s to you my man. 🍻

Chris was an idiot and quite possibly a tyrant. Change the day, but I don't care for the new term either. I'm sure we can come up with better.

Personally, I would favor abolishing January 18th, June 18th and October 11th, combining them into one Civil Rights Day.

Whatever moral judgment might be made on what Columbus did, no one can deny it was important. The Norse might have had a colony in America first, but it died out and was forgotten -- nobody even knows, now, whether their Vinland was in Newfoundland or further south. Nothing changed because of it. But after Columbus, the Old and New Worlds were no longer as if on separate planets.

Well, anyway, as the thread title says, "good bye Columbus".

And, yes, the local native tribes near my home are celebrating his departure from the calendar.

It's a practice as old as humanity -- hunting was never just about food.

Maybe a retarded yankee practice.

Hunting is one thing, killing animals for fun is only done by psychotic losers suffering from being powerless in their personal lives.

Zero respect.

Traditionally, it's done by aristocrats and royalty who are anything but powerless. I mean, nobody eats foxes -- it's all about the fun of the chase. (That practice is now illegal in the UK -- but I believe it is still done in Virginia, and by American aristocrats.)
