TAMPA — During his four years as governor of Florida, U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist restored the right to vote for hundreds of thousands of felons, a sweeping move subsequent Florida governors, Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis, didn’t follow.

As a gubernatorial hopeful for 2022, Crist said he’s renewing his push for felon voter restoration as part of a broad package to promote criminal justice and equality for Floridians of color.

Crist announced the plan Monday at the George Edgecomb Courthouse in Tampa. He said he aims to overhaul a criminal justice system that has failed people, especially Black people and other minorities.

“For too long we have focused on incarceration when we should be focusing on rehabilitation, forgiveness and restoring and rebuilding,” Crist said.

If elected governor next November, Crist said he’d support a state law allowing felons who committed non-violent crimes to have their voting rights restored automatically upon release. He pointed to the support for Amendment 4 in 2018, which called for non-violent felons who completed “all terms” of their sentences to have their voting rights restored.

More than two thirds of voters approved the amendment, yet Florida’s Legislature passed a bill months later that required felons to first pay off all court fees, fines and restitution costs.

“Floridians should not be forced to have to pay to get their rights back,” Crist said.

So this election is shaping up to be a referendum on certain things.

I can support being required to meet your legal obligations first.

Credit card debt is not court ordered as part of a criminal punishment.

So a law that discriminates against the poor and uses their poverty as an impediment to voting.

Seems fair.

Especially when you consider who is disproportionately incarcerated, and who is disproportionately poor.:rolleyes:

Can't pay your fines, don't do the crimes.

What's skin color got to do with it??? Other than lefty race baiting.

Motivation. That bill that undercut the referendum restoring felons' voting rights was not enacted by anyone racially colorblind. Nor was it necessarily motivated by racism as such -- but, rather, by a cynical calculation by Republicans that AAs 1) have a higher crime rate than whites and 2) are more likely to vote D than R if allowed to vote at all.

That is NOT justice, it's racial pandering of the worst sort. And that's exactly what the voters of Florida came to expect from that son of a bitch.

He's a liar and a quitter.

 Just like CRT, from your POV. Aiming to "to overhaul a criminal justice system that has failed people, especially Black people and other minorities" is not racial pandering and is justice, because the system really has failed in that regard.

He's a liar and a quitter.

Why a quitter? Because he left the GOP?

Bear in mind, this is a board where I have actually -- not making this up -- seen posters defend the old practice of property qualifications for voting.

Fuck you asshole, rewarding convicted felons IS NOT JUSTICE. On top of that the law applies to ALL convicted felons, or do you suppose he's just going to allow black felons to vote?

There is NO WAY convicted felons should be allowed to participate in the formulation of public policy without first having successfully petitioned the court to have their civil rights restored.

Yes, blacks are overly represented in the prisons, and not just in FL. Perhaps if they weren't so overly represented in the criminal community they wouldn't be overly represented in prison. That whine has turned to vinegar.

No, because he didn't stand for re-election as governor. His poll numbers were in the shitter so he quit.

And if I were DeSantis I'd be going to all the black communities in the state and merely say, "Look, he's a democrat. If he's elected he's going to force you to take the vaccine."

Which is exactly why (D)'eez are pushing to give criminals the keys to the prisons. :D

And, what's wrong with only letting people with an interest beyond "GIMMIE FREE SHIT!" vote??

I mean other than it would totally fucking ANNIHALATE the Democrats....

And letting them vote like everybody else is not rewarding them. I see no reason why they should not be allowed to vote while incarcerated. Prisoners are, after all, wards and slaves of the state -- they should at least get some small voice in how the state is run. And it costs no money.

^^ absolute proof (D)'eez and Peck especially hate the USA.

He wants to give criminals control over his life.

LOL I hope he gets it. :D

Somehow, I doubt that would win him any votes.

Racists like Ishmael and his white wannabee sidekick believe a black man's debt to society can NEVAR be paid....

It's almost like, I dunno, "permanent indentured servitude", y'know?

They're better citizens than you.

You think criminals are better citizens than non-criminal, educated, productive veterans who served their country instead of violating it.

That's a testament to just how backwards you are.

Go scream "War is peace and ignorance is strength!!" some more.....:D

I'd rather have them voting, than anyone who thinks supply-side economics is a good idea.

Yes we all know you and the other parasitic class want to give criminals a say in things because they're your class of people and will be your allies.

This is why people who's only interest and worth to society is getting the government to go steal other more productive peoples shit, should not be allowed to vote.

People who have served and invested in their community should get to run it.

Not the parasites and criminals seeking to exploit and destroy it.
