Hmmm... can it be? I have tried several times to get on to Facebook only to have it fail with "facebook.com’s DNS address could not be found." error. I have tried several different VPN addresses too. It appears to be gone.

Could someone have fact checked them and then banned them from the internet for making untrue statements?

We're finding out how vital it is. I've had some withdrawal but only because I use it for areas that aren't under attack (Instagram and its effect on teenage girls). Although Facebook is saying that the outage isn't related to a whistleblower's revelations or to congressional testimony about to begin, Facebook is clearly suffering lash back on the Zuckerberg effect (take the money to the bank and screw anybody hurt in the process).

That story about Instagram and teenage girls was fascinating. But all of Facebook is close to that. Remember, a few years ago, a guy killed his wife and his (or their) Facebook page stayed up for a few days? I saw it, and there wasn't a clue in there that they had any problems in the marriage.

While I share many of the concerns people have about how Facebook manages content, among other things, I find it an extremely useful service for keeping in touch with people. People like to bash it, but it certainly adds value for me.

As I recently grumped about software on another thread, it can be used in ways that are good and useful or... not so. It is apparently something of a lifeline for lots of isolated people, but it's also a conduit for levels of disinformation that would make Big Brother gape in disbelief.

But if the discussion I saw about BGP misconfiguration and their DNS configuration, then it won't simply pop back online everywhere. The reconfiguration information will ripple around the internet, so any of individual view will transition. It's back for me here.
