by being seen as a possible alternative to trump, can pence can rally enough pre-trump republicans who align with pence to throw a spanner in a trump/trump-ite runner's voting chances?

if enough refuse to vote for a trumpist runner but secure an enhanced republican presence in the senate/house, the old-style republicans could get their way even by not casting a presidential-runner vote. a dem presidency up against a rep house/senate will neuter a whole lot of dem power, like it did during President Obama's tenure.

My paternal grandmother and grandfather lived in Indiana. I don't know if he called her "mother," because he was dead before I was born, but I've heard the "mother" and "father" exchanges between husbands and wives there.

I think Pence was just shopping for a GOP elder statesman who would give him a green light to do Trump's bidding. He knew he wouldn't get it from any member of the Bush family, and at this point that means Quayle was next in line (remember how young he was when he was VP!). Also, Quayle was the last person (of either party) to be in Pence's shoes, overseeing a Senate that voted him out of office.

I agree, and has been pointed out, it ties him in very firmly as a party to Trump's intentions. It is to Quayle's credit that he gave Pence absolutely no way out.
