Especially a ginormous cargo ship in a narrow canal, natch... *

Then there's the Edmund Fitzgerald and Lake Superior (it was Superior, or was it Michigan? )

*i see Russ beat me to it.
Superior. Cues include "The ship was the pride of the American side." Michigan is the only one of the Greats that doesn't have a Canadian side.

More like a ginormous cargo ship in a narrow ditch. Not to mention a sand storm that was as powerful as a small hurricane.

Midnight coffee is ready, so come and get it.

Good to see that the Canal operators were prepared.... about as much as the Canadian government for a pandemic. which is my current pet peeve because to a Canadian, it is very embarrassing when the Americans actually do a better job of health care.

Ain't they supposed to be putting in a second (improved) waterway ?

Meanwhile, the wind's damned cold; I'm for a long hot coffee

I'll make the coffee early, just in case Laurel wanders by and closes the place.:eek:

The captain of the Ever Given knows all about that.

Not even their first time! They had another wind-related mishap back in 2019, smushing a ferry in Hamburg.

As some wag put it, "your goal as a ship captain should be to ensure that your ship's Wikipedia link never turns blue": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden-class_container_ship

Though if I understand correctly, she would have been in the charge of local pilots at the time.

I went through the canal a couple of years after the Suez conflict when the canal had been blocked by scuttled ships. Most had been cleared but some were still there.

Our liner was small - 22,000 tons and the transit should have been easy but the captain, the ship's officers, and even the passengers weren't impressed with the local pilot who couldn't seem to be able to steer a straight course.

Maybe, because we were such a small ship, he was a junior.

When the stuck ship was about to enter the canal, perhaps the weather forecast might have made it sensible to delay for a few hours? There are indicators that an enquiry will be held and the weather is considered an aggravating factor but NOT the major cause.

well I may have you topped

I had the second shot two weeks ago; most of the stores I need to visit still require masks, regardless of what the Guv did. Like Tx, I am in the 'age' group although I don't (so far as I am aware of) have any major health issues. Therefore, I will continue to 'mask up' for many, many more weeks. (I suspect I am possibly the oldest person that posts in this thread; I am older than Tx.)

I am 82 and post on here. I got my second shot in February. I still mask up and try to stay 6 feet away at all times. We play cards each week with another 80 year old couple without masks believe it is called taking them into our bubble. Good to have something like this. Forget what politicians do or say just follow your own common sense. Especially with the virus mutations going on around the world and moving around rapidly.

Updates

I am slowly cobbling together another chapter of More Tales from the Guilds but the coming week I will be over the Cascades trying to augment my meat supply. If successful, I shall have to leave the quarters at the butchers and search out another freezer. Elks is yuge!

Bear, you’re a whole thread behind. TxRad’s abandoned this joint and moved to number seven, just next door. :)

I hope Bear has better luck with Elk than he does with finding the right thread.

I thought Laurel closed this dump down. I'll remind her.

This is not the right thread!
