Texas law could force social media to host misinformation and hate speech

Texas passes social media 'de-platforming' law

(Gov. Greg Abbott signed HB 20 into law.)

The law is due to come in to force in December

https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-58516155

"This bill abandons conservative values, violates the First Amendment, forces websites
to host obscene, anti-semitic, racist, hateful and otherwise awful content."
-Steve DelBianco
NetChoice trade association.

The new law states social media platforms with more than 50 million users
cannot ban people based on their political viewpoints.

Facebook, Twitter and Google's YouTube are within its scope.

Critics say the law does not respect the constitutional right of private businesses
to decide what sort of content is allowed on their platforms.

September 10, 2021

HB 20 severely limits the ability of large social media platforms to remove
disinformation, harmful propaganda, hate speech, and incitement of violence.

The bill actually allows sites to remove such speech -
only if it “consists of specific threats of violence.”

This is the very narrowest definition of incitement to violence.

It’s the kind of very narrow requirement that has protected both KKK leaders and
Tucker Carlson when calling for violence or other harmful acts against groups,
without making a specific threat,

By prohibiting social media platforms from removing text that doesn’t feature
a specific threat, they have created a “must carry” situation.

One in which the social media platforms that fit their definition
(which seems to be Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok,
Pinterest, and Snapchat, but could expand to Google, Apple, and others
thanks to some broad language) can not remove hate speech or disinformation,
no matter how malignant.

- Daily Kos

Seriously. Texas just passed a law (and Abbott just signed it) which prohibits
social media sites from removing hate speech, or posts that promote terrorism,
or intentional misinformation about vaccines, or holocaust denial.

The cancer backlog scandal is so much worse than you think

At the start of the pandemic I said that lockdown could end up killing
more people than Covid – I wish I had been wrong

- Allison Pearson

21 September 2021

A No 10 spokesman said that every patient had the right to a face-to-face appointment.

The “Poor me!” fit of the vapours from the British Medical Association is already
starting.

A lack of access to face-to-face appointments, coupled with a fear of coming forward
to burden the NHS, could be responsible for the unnecessary deaths from cancer
of 25,000 men, women and children. To that sad toll, you can add tens of thousands
of future fatalities from stroke, diabetes and heart failure. Back at the start of the
pandemic, I said that lockdown could end up killing more people than Covid.
I wish I had been wrong.

The stage is now set for a battle between doctors’ trade unions on the one hand
and patients and the Government on the other.

Will GPs continue to ignore the letter from NHS England, brought about
by a Telegraph campaign, which told them they must all ensure they are
offering face-to-face appointments? As the Covid risk diminishes for the
vaccinated majority of the population, will GPs insist that they must be
“safe” when that means sticking with phone and online consultations
which are clearly less safe for the sick people who depend on them?

A GP who declares that they won’t see any patient with a cough has lost sight
of what it means to be a doctor. For God’s sake, get yourself a box of tissues
and some Strepsils. Physicians, heal yourselves!

Trump Won Texas Last Year, but Republicans Are Auditing the Elections Anyway

September 29, 2021

Critics have called the Texas governor a puppet of former President Donald Trump.
Now, they have fresh ammo to bolster that claim.

Last week, the Texas Secretary of State’s Office announced it had begun the process
of auditing the 2020 election in four counties: Dallas, Tarrant, Harris and Collin.
The move came hours after Trump issued a letter to Gov. Greg Abbott calling
on him to “get to the bottom of the 2020 Presidential Election Scam!”

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, a Democrat, believes the timing is suspect.

“We’re not talking about a group of extremists here; this is the former president
of the United States … telling the Republican governor of the second-largest state
to audit an election that the Republicans won, and spread a narrative that you can’t
trust elections,” he said. “I mean, that should scare the hell out of people.”

Despite a lack of trust, state elections officials have insisted the 2020 elections
were “safe and secure.” The Texas Secretary of State’s website also says there’s
been no evidence of compromised voting or voter registration systems before
or after the 2016 election.

In his letter to Abbott, Trump himself touted House Bill 16, which would allow
for audits of the 2020 presidential and future elections.

Twitter slams Sen. John Cornyn for cheering Norway's vaccination rate
after he downplayed COVID-19

September 28, 2021

Senator. John Cornyn

Twitter users pounced Monday when the Texas Republican shared an Associated Press
story about Norway's COVID-19 restrictions ending.

Twitter users lit up Cornyn for what they said amounts to his inability to take
a firm stand against the anti-vaccine sentiment rife among the GOP base.
That certainly seems to be the case in his own bright-red Texas, which ranks
29th among U.S. states in terms of people who have been fully vaxxed.

Some called the senator's soft sell on Norway's admirable milestone too little too late.
Others torched him for over his unflinching support for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott,
who's repeatedly fought mask and vaccine mandates even amid the Delta variant surge.

Kyrsten Sinema is cozying up to corporate groups
that are aiming to kill Biden’s domestic agenda

As Congressional Democrats frantically tried to reach agreement on passing
President Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill and $3.5 trillion social
spending bill, Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz), one of the key moderates blocking
the Build Back Better Act, abruptly left Washington DC for Arizona on Friday.

Her spokesman said she had a medical appointment for a foot injury, but it turns out
Sinema will be attending a fundraising “retreat” for her political action committee
at a high-end Phoenix resort and spa on Saturday.

It’s the second time in a week Sinema will have fundraised with corporate interests
who oppose Biden’s spending bill.

On Tuesday, at an undisclosed location at Capitol Hill, she held a fundraiser with
five business lobbying groups -
who agreed to write checks between $1,000 and $5,800 after spending 45 minutes
with her. The fundraiser was hosted by corporate groups including the National
Association of Wholesaler-Distributors, as well as political action committees
for the supermarket industry and various/ construction interests that are trying
to kill Biden’s signature domestic agenda.

The Trump Cult Candidate for Arizona Governor Would Not Have Certified

That's the state that just completed a fake audit (fraudit) performed by the rabidly

Lake is the perfect Trump surrogate. She is a TV celebrity with no political experience,

Trump Whined to Acting Attorney General:
You’ll Do Nothing to Help Me ‘Overturn’ Election

the president allegedly opened a high-stakes Oval Office meeting by complaining

The extraordinary claim was made by former Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen

Trump’s pressure campaign to overturn the 2020 election

October 7, 2021

- Aaron Blake

Dec. 31: Pence asks a judge to reject a lawsuit that aimed to expand his power
to help overturn the election. Trump becomes livid.

Around this time: Conservative lawyer John Eastman writes a memo detailing a path
for Pence to reject the results from certain states and possibly allowing Trump to
remain in office.

The plan involves getting House Democrats to cry foul, at which point Pence would
citing constitutional process, allow the House to elect the president. Given the House
has GOP majorities in 26 of 50 states and the vote would take place by delegation,
it could allow for Trump to win.

Jan. 1: (Mark) Meadows emails Rosen several times with theories about the election.

(Rep. Mark Meadows (NC) became Trump's Chief of Staff, after Mick Mulvaney exited.)

Jan. 3: Clark informs Rosen that Trump has decided to replace Rosen with Clark,
and that it would take place that day rather than as previously suggested on Jan. 4,
per Rosen. Rosen responds that he will need to hear that from Trump.

During a White House meeting in which the DOJ officials say there will be
mass resignations and White House counsel Pat Cipollone and others warn
Trump about proceeding.

Trump abandons the idea.

Trump calls Donoghue and cites baseless claims that a Department of Homeland
Security special agent had a truck full of shredded ballots in Atlanta, per Donoghue.

Jan. 4: Eastman meets with Trump and Pence.

Jan. 5: Trump angrily vents to Pence and aides about Pence’s refusal
to toe his line on rejecting electors.

Jan. 6: Trump speaks with Pence multiple times in the morning and presses his case
on overturning the election. Pence continues to refuse, eventually releasing
a statement saying he cannot do what he’s being asked to do.

In the early afternoon, as Congress meets, the U.S. Capitol is overrun
by Trump supporters seeking to overturn the election,

During the riot — and as Congress still hadn’t finished its business —
Trump attacks Pence in a tweet.
