there are burns, and then there are burns...

What's this all about? I have read that Ireland is seriously considering a unification referendum, which the Good Friday Agreement provides for, as a solution to NI being pulled out of the EU by Brexit, creating a "hard border" between NI and the Republic -- is it that?

I have also heard that a unification referendum could lead to a revival of terrorism, just because so many parties on both sides have a vested interest in the status quo -- career Republicans, career Unionists, all out of a job if the issue is resolved once and for all.

That seems to happen all the time on Twitter, almost always involving a male know-it-all and a woman who literally wrote the book on the topic.

But, again, what is this about? To what purpose is this woman citing the Good Friday Agreement?

I have read that Ireland is seriously considering a unification referendum . . .

Here, specifically.

But that article does not really address the traditional "Home Rule Is Rome Rule" resistance of the Ulster Prots.

Of course, the Catholics and the Protestants do not actually fight over which version of Christianity God prefers. They fight because the Papest bogtrotters are descended from the original Celtic Irish, and the Proddy dogfuckers are descended from English and Scottish settlers who were sent to Ireland for the express purpose of dominating and marginalizing the Celts.

"In the end, it is a matter of nationality. The Celts have brought nothing to Ireland but trouble and disorder. Any Irishman who has turned out to be successful has in no case that I know of been of true Celtic origin."

-- Edward Carson

IRISH
Racial Characteristics:
Pie-faced, neckless, bandy-legged sots who almost never fuck. Ignorant and superstitious, they are in utter thrall to the vile, conniving priests of their dark and barbarous religion. Their women have their legs on upside down and no man in the country eats anything but potatoes, and only eats them when he's out of strong drink. The principal delights of the Irish are in quarrelling and fighting and killing each other with bombs. They can be trained to do nothing useful that a dray horse can't accomplish in half the time, and they spew out a continuous stream of mumbles and grunts which they fancy to be "poems." They will sell their children for whiskey.

There once was an Irishman who got so drunk while in Rome that he kissed his wife and beat the Pope's foot to a pulp with a coal shovel.

There are underwhelming events as well.

You can tell it's a sick burn when some Deplorable hack meanders into a thread like this, and feels compelled to give an effete poke of the stick. :rose:

"Gladstone spent his declining years trying to guess the answer to the Irish Question; unfortunately, whenever he was getting warm, the Irish secretly changed the Question..."

1066 and All That

From the TVTropes page on the Irish Question:

And then Brexit ripped open a lot of wounds deemed long healed both in Northern Ireland and in the Republic as well as along the Irish Border and in the relations between the two countries. Something that some on the island of Ireland had warned about ahead of the Brexit vote but the vast majority of the British voting public - both "Leave" and "Remain" - did not consider a major factor in the Brexit debate until years after the vote when Ireland related issues seemed to turn into the dominant issue of Brexit. Sadly, old patterns of discussion are reappearing in this issue - British politicians, particularly Tories and pro-Brexit voices accuse Ireland of being "in cahoots" with the EU and needlessly making life difficult for all involved to "get back at Britain" whereas Irish politicians feel as if the UK Tories treat them like they still rule (or "should" rule) the place. Meanwhile those in Northern Ireland - both Nationalists and Unionists - feel ignored and misunderstood by Westminster and feel like they have to suffer for something England decided on a whim without thinking of the consequences.

Is there any possibility of this?

and a woman who literally wrote the book on the topic.

She wrote a book on the topic. Her take on it. What makes her the authority on the good friday agreement, something arranged between the British and Irish governments?

She's a journalist who not only wrote a book on the Good Friday Agreement but is acknowledged as a politics writer and adviser to Sinn Fein based in Belfast.

Why would he or any American give a shit about what happens in Ireland, right now?

Because there are about ten times as many Irish-Americans as Irish-Irish. During the Troubles, when the IRA was a thing, it had a lot of Irish-American donors. Possibly even some volunteers.

Who gives a shit? Every radical movement in recent history has American supporters...mostly left wingers.

one of the most glaring signs of a deplorable is their absolute lack of intellectual curiosity about anything that doesn't impact them personally

wait, that can be abbreviated to 'their total lack of intellectual curiosity...'
