Now that the light of day has borne this up as a legitimate story and concern (I wouldn't disagree that it's basically a hostage situation--one that's natural for the Taliban to pursue unless it wants to consider the long-term benefits in its international reputation), I'll note that the thread premise is false. This is nothing like the Iran hostage situation under Carter. Those were diplomats doing their jobs in a compound supposedly protected by international law. This is private work people who didn't leave in the five months the U.S. government told them they needed to leave. That's the Americans involved. Most of these are still Afghans who worked for U.S. interests (some, I assume private business, not U.S. government support). That they haven't left up until now can, in many cases, be laid at the feet of the Trump White House (and, specifically Stephen Miller), who pretty much killed their visa program--and, yes, the Biden administration shoulders some of the blame by not opening that visa spigot wide again once they got into office.

This current situation is a private evacuation effort, not a U.S. government one. The U.S. government realistic spelled out its limitations in this regard five months ago.
