A Taliban representative told Newsweek in an interview Monday that the jihadist organization will, if permitted, play an indispensable role on the international stage in fighting climate change, among other supposed global challenges.

The magazine discussed the potential of the Taliban, now in power as Afghanistan’s government for over a week, to receive recognition from the international community as a legitimate governing body. The Taliban is a radical Islamist terrorist organization, designated as such not only by the United States, but by nations now apparently pressuring international institutions to accept it, most prominently the government of Russia.

I don't suppose Afghanistan was ever a significant source of greenhouse gases. At least not at tailpipe-or-smokestack.

They'll still sell their NG, of course.

Seems like the Talibs are significantly reducing the carbon footprint of hundreds of people.

Why would progressives be dancing in the streets over this? You continue to insist on making dumb threads out of nothing. Beyond that, what significant influence internationally, other than as a bad example, such as you yourself exhibit, would you expect a Taliban government in a remote desert is going to be able to assert on anything like climate change?

The Taliban PR team is in overdrive to be recognized by the global community.

They'd say free ponies for everyone right now if they were given valid recognition as the leaders of the country.

Nothing they say should be trusted.

They'll pretty much have to get that recognition -- nobody else can claim it.

Nobody owes them recognition. The closest we will come is negotiations to complete withdrawal. After that, I suspect the US will consult with the G8 and give a united conclusion, which could very well exclude recognition.

Yep, what greenhouse gases? They are a terribly poor country when it comes to GDP, earnings and consumption.

The poor in the world are not a significant source of greenhouse gases....what they do(though not by choice) is actually a good thing for the planet.

This is a stupid post started above!

.
Progressives are a whole lot less gullible than Deplorables.

So no.

Dancing in the streets? Of course not. But if we take them at face value which we don't have much to lose by doing it good for them. CC is more than just carbon output anyhow. People are very, very tunnel vision on this and even what carbon output even is.

Is Afghanistan to be officially classified as a country with no recognized government? That wasn't even done to Somalia, as far as I can recall.

As I was saying:

President Biden said that the G-7 allies agreed on a need to "coordinate our approach" to Afghanistan going forward, including holding the Taliban to a standard of not allowing Afghanistan to be used as a base for terrorism.

There are a few countries without recognized governments.

The Taliban will also tell you they respect women. Talk is cheap.
