Specifically peanuts, which I know are not really a nut.
They seem different now. Why?
The cocktail peanuts of my youth, were huge and oily. We generally only bought them for company. It was my job to line the green glass bowl with paper towels. I'd carefully dump the nuts in, put more paper towels on top and blot all the excess oil off. I also had to wipe out the can. Leftover nuts went back in there. No sense putting them back in a pool of oil.
Then there were the Spanish, redskin peanuts. I remember them being larger than they are now. Exception being the ones sold in gumball type machines. Those were puny and usually rancid.
My mom's favorite cookies were like chocolate chip, but with Spanish peanuts instead of chips. I'd bake them for her.
My step grandpa always gave me some Spanish peanuts in the car. He'd tell me the story of the guy he knew who choked to death on a peanut hull. So I would put the nuts in my mouth, pretend to choke and hurl myself onto the floor of the car. He would then freak and pull over. Repeat, repeat, repeat. He must have thought it was funny or something.
Fast forward to...maybe 35 years ago or so. My friend was helping me set out food for a party. He commented that the cocktail peanuts were not oily. Say what? They tasted different too. Not as good. I suppose they changed the type of oil they used to roast them in.
I don't recall eating or buying any peanuts for a few years after that. When I tried them again, they were not oily but tasted fine.
Fast forward again to maybe 15 years ago. The nuts got puny and not as crunchy. Someone told me this was due to a drought. But... Things have not gotten better in the size dept. I've bought some that were labeled as "jumbo". Nope. Puny and soft. Right now I have the Good & Gather (cocktail) brand from Target. They taste okay. They are crunchy. But they are tiny.
Spanish peanuts are now hard to find. Most stores no longer carry them.
So... What happened to my nuts?
