He was indeed a patriot throughout his career and gave his health and body parts in the cause of patriotism. And his time in politics wasn't anything like the Republicans now. He was a conservative in Congress, yes, but he played by rules and patriotic traditions.

It's a disappointment that he is so party that he would vote for Trump, who ruined his party, just because Trump had usurped and carried the party flag, but I think it's quite wrong to deny his patriotism to the United States. You can be an asshole and a patriot at the same time.

You can also be an asshole to ignore actual service to the country when you were called to give it.
