However, when I was a pretty young gentleman (of 18 yrs old) I was visiting my cousins house and she had a Playgirl magazine out on her desk. My mom, sister, aunt and I all saw it there and the women had a good laugh. I, of course, was mortified, but also intrigued that women seemed to like looking at naked guys too.
Who knew!
"Playgirl was a publishing disaster. Initial curiosity aside like the Burt Reynolds centerfold -- like your mom, sister, etc. -- no women bought it and the only readers were gay men. So, they couldn't sell ads. The advertisers of women's products wouldn't buy the ads because there was no audience/market, and the publishing company would accept ads for men because it would tarnish their brand and image. It was kept alive at a loss for a few years to save face, but then buried.
Helen Gurley Brown was much more successful with "Cosmo." She knew how to market to women.
