Wow, just tried to get a friend's brand new Windows 10 laptop up and running...and it is a hot mess. Friend made the mistake of not listening to me and didn't buy an Apple, and now...again, I am very impressed that MS is able to sell such a disaster of an operating system. WOW!

Me neither. And I've installed two in the last week.

If you bought it off the shelf, it works. Error is between keyboard and chair.

Windows 10 won't recognise my older printer despite downloads from the printer manufacturer. I have to use a Win 7 system to print.

What is Windows 11 like?

i don't believe it's out yet. you can google some previews, though.

Interesting to see some not-negative reviews! So, the thing is, 10 ships crippled, in 10S mode. Now, what is the very first thing a user wants to do with their new machine? That's right, install Firefox. 10S prevents that. Further, it won't tell you it won't install it, it just spins. Even more glorious, searching ' firefox won't install windows 10' leads to MS support forums...which never mention 10S. Genius! Okay, so find other forums, and you can download an app from the MS Store to turn off 10s and go back to 10. And then...MS Store won't load. Just spins and spins. I told her to get a professional, cause nothing I could throw at it worked.

Not sure you can blame Win 10 for that. It fair and square Apple's problem.

This is sad to read. The old adage remains that some people are too stupid to own computers. Macs are awesome too but they are for stupid people.

Windows 10S is an option. Whoever bought the laptop is at fault. Not Microsoft.

i was going to say i'd never even heard of 10s. i'm running pro now. my previous frankenstein computer that was supposedly an hp pavilion ran the home edition.

10S is fairly new. It’s the equivalent of a lite secure version. It’s only going to run apps from the AppStore and will not use anything else. It’s great for students and older folks who don’t mind using Microsoft Edge and playing slots and solitaire while using Microsoft 365 and nothing else.

It’s supposed to be more secure but also much cheaper.

As a long-time Mac user (I even had the original toaster-oven),
these threads amuse me to no end.

I was content with Windows 3.1. Everything since then has become more complicated, less reliable, and offers facilities that I do not need or use...

Old school!! 3.1 was great. Now it will easily be ripped apart by a child and all your info stolen. Things progress for a reason. Some reasons good some bad

All software and operating system platforms are great and each serve their purpose well enough.

I use and love them all. Mac is best for home. Linux best for cheap easy processing. Windows.. well corporate America I guess. This is all subjective of course. Like saying a certain music sucks. Who am I to say?

For my writing, I was happy with CP/M and a Ferranti WP package. When I changed to DOS and an IBM XT, I originally used WordStar 1512 (a stripped version that could be run from a 360K floppy) eventually upgrading to Wordstar 2000+ which I still regret.

If I was to revert to CP/M I doubt anyone would want to try to hack it.

That’s before my time sir. I’m pretty sure I was messing with a Commodore 64 until I could afford a personal computer. My first word processor was WordPerfect 5.1.

My first computer was an IBM 1401 mainframe running from punched cards in 1964. I was the system manager and using it for occasional Word processing - although the print quality was terrible...

I honestly had to google that. I thought I was old.

No offense of course! Crazy those mainframes came out in 1959. Must have been pretty big!

Windows 10 is fine. I paid $200 for an HP laptop and absolutely love it. No problems whatsoever.

Apple is so overrated due to its price. A friend paid over $900 for a Mac Book and it has no USB ports or CD-ROM drive. Mine has three USB ports. Enough said.

Lastly, if you go to GM or any huge corporation, all you'll see are Windows based computers. No Apple. Hmm... :)

The CPU was about the size of four four-drawer filing cabinets standing together. The input out card machine about three three-drawer cabinets.

The vertical keys on the right hand lower of the open panel were for patching programmes on the go. One byte could be changed at once!

i'm having flashbacks to playing old text adventure games on an ancient IBM right now. it made the shitty apple 2's they still had at my school in the early 90s seem fucking amazing in comparison.

it also made me hate those old text adventure games to this day. i still feel the frustration trying to get that idiotic program to let me play the damned game. go north, you bastard.
