I’d like to learn authors’ practical experience with writing for the First Time category. I’ve done a little reading there, and it seems that the readership doesn’t insist on Summer of ’42 memoirs and tender deflowering of eager young beauties.

I doubt many people come here just to read First Time. Your readers will come from a wide range of interests, and many from the New list.

Also, I think "first time" can be the first time for anything (anal sex, for instance) not just first-time sex.

My only story in First Time was about first-time sex. It's kinda the way I remember it: tense and fumbling, stop and go. I added a funny and dream-like quality to it, because that's how I remember the time.

I don't think readers knew what to make of it at first, but they came around.

I think a certain segment — perhaps even a significant one — is looking for barely legal beauties being deflowered.

That being said, I did fairly well with my only outing in the category, which was a chapter 2 that started in Toys & Masturbation, came out more than a year after the first part, and is about a twenty-something nerdy guy and his bully's mom.

The numbers are probably padded by my large Mature readership, as are the numbers for the first part in Toys, so your mileage may vary.

My second story went into first time. It wasn't a tender introduction for Cathy and it ran around the border of NC later in the story. Cathy flattened the pig of a male character. It's sitting at 4.73 with four comments.

The tagline of "Her humiliating first time fuck consequences" helped set the scene, I think.

And that, good sir, wins a prize. As masterful an example of what Master Doom would call "good tagsmanship" as you'll ever find ;).

Thank you, thank you all.

I'd like to thank Heyall for sending me off on the right track.

I have one in First Time, it's about a homeless waif taken in by a homeless man who... well you'll have to read the story.

It currently sits at...

Mary Tagert is the story, there are two parts, the second just had to go into Erotic Couplings as it's no longer her first time. :)

He gets my Stamp of Doomproval, for sure.

Writing a tagline is no time for nuance and subtlety.

I tried First time once, back in 2014 an entry in the last Earth Day contest before it was replaced with April Fools.

I had an idea for something unique for me, a romance that was sweet with no train wreck back stories or dark aspects, just straight up romance using the trope of long time friends one of whom has a thing for the other while the other is oblivious.

But, tired of the manly man has to seduce the young innocent virgin, I went with the boy being the virgin and the girl had sex with prior boyfriends(yes the occasional incel who has fallen on this story had lots to say about that)

I didn't expect much from it, kind of out of my wheelhouse, but figured its not like I have anything to lose.

How did it do? Won the Earth Day contest, is somewhere on the top First time all time story list and....these are the stats

That's What Friends Are For
Justin's best friend Samantha will do anything for him.

Interesting thing is this story was slightly over 4.8 for years, then out of nowhere I got a few of the incel comments that the girl was a whore, and its under 4.8 now.

Worth mentioning the nasty comments/ bombing started after I mentioned it in a thread that I cracked the top 15 all time favorite story list.

Sour grapes on the forum lead to sour comments and ones.

Nature of the beast

I've done a handful of First Time - first time boy, first time girl, first time boy and girl. Most of them did quite well. No complaints.

Serious question for those with experience in this category:

Is there a particular type of story that is most well-received in this category, or one that is NOT well-received?

For instance:

1. Two people and it's the first time for both.
2. First time for woman but not for man.
3. First time for man but not for woman.

Is one better received than the others?

I'm working (that's a stretch -- it's in the planning stages, with one page written, like dozens of my stories) on a story about a high school senior boy (held back a year so 18 isn't a problem) and a young calculus teacher. First time for him but not for her. She's probably around 30. The theme of it being his first time will be important. But is this more of a First Time story or a Mature story? It's a sweet romance -- probably my first one.

I've two stories in there, my Summer Lovin' 2020 and Geek Pride 2021.

The first one seems to have hit the audience well, or at least one sort of story they like. M (18) / F (19), both first-timers as they ramp up from first meeting to mutual masturbation to intercourse. It's romantic, but not Romance, as there is no chase, although there is a HEA.

The second was a much more ambitious story about experienced 'predators' hunting virgins. Sort of. It was also meant as a revenge tale. It was underbaked and I rushed to get it in. Ratings show it. I also think, although it has lots of M and F first-time action, not quite the right flavor for the group. Had I really looked at it, I'd shift a few things and put it into NonHuman or SF&F.

30 is a little on the young side for Mature, as the readership tends to define it. What I do when I'm on that low side is just never really pin down any age. Make it fairly clear that she's not fresh out of college, and the position of authority + ambiguity is probably sufficient to allow the readers to pin whatever age they feel is appropriate onto her and eliminate that potential speed bump.

That's more or less the way I handled the situation in "Silence is Goldwyn", which is also a teacher/virgin (former) student story. I believe I pinned his age down to a couple of years out of high school. I seem to remember one comment about "I don't know how old she is..." hinting that they caught me trying to walk the line, but nothing much else commenting on their ages.

In my mind, he was about 19-20 and she was in the 32-34 range.

I eventually decided that that one focused more on the age difference than the first time, so I went with Mature. My large following in the category also influences any such decisions. I'm on the verge of breaking my own rules about threesomes and moresomes going to group even when they're age difference stories, because I leave so much readership on the table going with group.

Then again, I had so much success with "You Serious?" that I might not be leaving as much on the table there in the future. LOL See what happens the next time one of those crosses the finish line.

I wonder. Do you or LC ever think that your huge fan following effects your results? I'm not sure that your experiences are even relevant to what other writers might expect.

That's why I specifically pointed that out in respect to First Time.

When it comes to Mature, I doubt there's many who know more about the readership there than the two of us combined.

It's not a raw numbers thing, it's a comparative thing.

Thanks for all the responses to this thread, and I'll keep following it, for the more detailed question by SimonDoom. Because the alternative would be yet another posting in Erotic Couplings, I think I'll make this story my first time in First Time (somebody had to fall on that sword).

I'll enter the story in the Summer Lovin' contest.

It's currently 14k words, past the sleep-induction point of my writing on most readers.

The female main character is the virgin. She's high-functioning autistic.

The male main character has had PIV sex four times, pleasing nobody. He almost certainly has ADHD, but has never been diagnosed or medicated.

Neither one is conventionally attractive.

This thing is dead on arrival.

I've done all of them. The one first-time-for-both received disappointing ratings and comments, but I'm inclined to blame that more on my writing than the character mix.

There's no way to know for sure, but my guess is a lot of fans of my mother son stuff come over to mature for my milf stuff that readership does cross over...all about mom, yours or another person's I guess.

As far as following into every category, I can't say I think my first time story got some new fans and its grown over the years because it was a contest winner and has been on top lists for the category and all time fav lists.

Speaking with some experience in the category (6 of the Top 20 Hall of Fame right now), the readership do not insist, altho tender deflowering does, obviously, do well.

Lets see, I have a 1930's tearjerker (Tales from Old Shanghai), historical blood, guts and violence along with chinese princess and Vikings (Huginn's Yule), schoolgirl and teacher romance (F is for Fail), tentacles and a virgin (I Married a Heptapod), another historical with a lot of blood and death as well as hot sex (One Night in Xanadu), and of course, Biker + sweet Chinese girl (Chinese Takeout).

NONE of those are Summer of 42, or tender deflowering, altho I guess I Married a Heptapod might be, just, with tentacles. F is for Fail and Fingerprints on my Heart would be about the closest, but really, First Time can be stretched pretty broadly and the readership are very tolerant - I mean, "I Married a Heptapod" in the Top 20 in the First Time Hall of Fame. I snorted my coffee when it popped up there. That was me having fun when I put it in First Time.... but it does show how accepting First Time readers are.
