In canada, this isn't hundreds of years ago or thousands of miles away. For their parents and grandparents, this is in living memory. These statues represent a system that stole, tortured and murdered children with living siblings, nieces and nephews.

I don't recall hearing or reading criticism of the iraqi people when a statue of saddam was toppled. I mostly remember people cheering them on, sharing in the joy of removing the symbols of a regime that killed, crushed and tortured. Everyone seemed to understand that feeling then.
