NAS, media servers and Plex.

I have an old desktop that I built for my ma a couple of years ago. Reasonable processor and ram. Thinking of setting it up as a NAS. Anyone use Plex as the 'ware or prefer something else?

Ahem...

Plex is the shit. Get a lifetime pass and use their guidelines. It's important and there's a wealth of info on Plex.tv.

Depending on if you're gonna watch 4k and/or REMUX versions, that desktop might not cut it. Get a used Apple 4K TV/Roku/Shield for your client I also run a neat little proggie called "MrMC" which I use when Plex doesn't tick the right boxes.

Initially at least it's gonna be running 1080 and music. I have a couple of 4K TVs but next to no 4k content on HD.

You should be good then. Look for .mp4 files if possible as there's no transcoding and they play easier than .mkv, etc.

I run Plex on a Synology DS720+ and it works well. Primarily I use it to access my music but I've got a few movies and shows here and there with the audio streams, bit rates, definition, subs etc. kinda all over the place, and it handles this all well and gives you the ability to get things organized just as you like including choosing default audio channels and default subs for each title that supports these.

It revealed to me how much ABBA I own, and that has changed everything.

I have a lower end gaming laptop (MSi) I use with PLEX and works great for movies( up to 1080p) on all the smart tv's in house. I like it better on Roku than Smart but both work well.

Was thinking of setting up a true NAS to share with a few others outside house, but then researched and realized it would likely take a few more $$$ and no how than I want to spend.
