A young widow of an Afghan soldier, truly the one she considers soulmate, finds relief from grief after a long period of mourning in best friend who shows her how to live and love again.
It should be a longer story detailing her grieving process, maybe w some sexy flashbacks to her husband showing how she misses a human touch of someone she loves and the organic way that the friendship develops into love complete w confusion, and sense of betraying his memory initially that I feel would be natural and finally acceptance.
As a guy I feel supremely unqualified to write this story but I believe the right author could weave a poignant and sexy romance leading to a happy ending

I actually lived this
But
More of a loss of my trust in men in general
With a best friend
A long time GF that listened to me whine into my wine
A GF I knew since forever that was a lesbian just as long
The consoling. The listening. The supporting. The caressing
Eventually enabled an unexpected change in the relationship

I could see this working. The widow may feel less guilty falling in love with her GF than with another man, because it is less of a "replacement" for her lost love, and more of a new direction in her life.

The next level of closeness.
Unexpectedly, an easy transition

Jeanne and Sgt Luc, and Dottie and Sgt Ray, reside in adjoining NCO housing units on a stateside base. Luc and Ray are in a Hummer shredded by an IED in the sandbox near Kandahar. Wrecked by their losses, Jeanne and Dottie turn to each other for intimate support, same as many other neighbor widows on base. They have no use for a Jody (guy who seduces wives of the deployed).

Kicker: Luc and Ray aren't really dead, and return to find their entwined wives. Or they ARE really dead, and their ghosts return, visible or not. Story is told from POV of Luc and/or Ray.

Luc and Ray, dead and loving it, return home to find their widows in flagrante delicto with each other. Turned on by the sight, despite their ectoplasmic state, they have no choice but to turn to each other for non-corporeal sexual gratification.

THE WIDOW and FRIEND both live on a Marine base with a close proximity to Afghanistan territories still in flux to enable easy deployment.

THE BASE is overseas, self-contained within total isolation.

Even though THE WIDOW is medicated and receiving therapy to ease and dissipate her bereavement she still feels even more isolated than the base she is essentially trapped within until they process the death of her husband.

THE FRIEND is a long time friend that has pined for THE WIDOW ever since they went through puberty together. THE WIDOW was sexually active with boys early while THE FRIEND struggled with her sexuality until she realized that she was a lesbian.

THE FRIEND purposely enlisted in The Marines as a potential to be stationed or transferred to where THE WIDOW and her husband were stationed. She was actually well suited for the rigors of the corps as she was trim, aggressive and fearless. Yet, she was lacking friendship, personal connection and not even close to a love life. Other women in the camp were attracted to her secretly and openly but THE FRIEND always had THE WIDOW on her mind even while having sex with others.

Now, both of these women were isolated in their own way. They both were drawn back together after all these years as a means of venting and consoling with each other. These little talks became long conversations which grew into emotionally-soaked sessions. Holding hands grew into brushing hair then became long hugs.

One of these sessions got very deep and very drunk when the consoling and tender touching became more so as THE FRIEND slowly made advances towards THE WIDOW with a little resistance at first but then full surrender.

THE WIDOW woke up first naked next to THE FRIEND naked in the bed shared with her husband not too long ago. She sat up and looked at the pictures on the bed stand and on the wall and then looked at THE FRIEND's bare breasts.

THE WIDOW was consumed with new emotions waiting for THE FRIEND to wake up . . .
