So as I go through a dry spell of starting half a dozen stories that I can't seem to finish I've been toying with some more unusual ideas.

I've been thinking about stories revolving around invisibility, the set up I haven't decided on yet but either sudden self discovery or mad science potion kind of thing, that's less relevant than what to do with it.

I've read a few existing stories on the site and they all go in a different direction and involve general mischief or out and out abuse of the other characters.

Where I was going was, if you had this ability what would you want to see? You could in theory go almost anywhere, into their homes, watch them shower, bathe, masturbate, fuck etc. It has a strong voyeuristic streak, but how does the Invisible person get their relief, they could masturbate but that's about it, they can't touch anything or anyone without giving themselves away.

Do they discover something that enables them to get into bed with someone in real life? I guess I just don't know how to bring the story full circle.

I ran into this problem too. It's difficult to have an invisible character that engages in the action of the story, so it ends up being very stalker-ish. I ended up exploring the idea of what sex looks like where one of the participants is invisible.

I remember once reading a story somewhere where a girl is invisible but can be seen in reflections, and I'd love to find that again.

1) The invisible person can get caught. Either the invisibility isn't as reliable as they thought in general, or they run into someone it doesn't work on (doesn't necessarily require extrasensory perception, just heightened attention and awareness might do), or they make mistakes like knocking things over out of clumsiness, or, say getting into shower with someone might be bad idea as there's good chance for a wet ghost to appear, or dust of any kind, like flour, may do the same.

Note that this likely won't be the first time they observe the person; the observed person may not announce they have noticed the observed especially if they are unsure about what they are not seeing; and an "accident" like flour spill in midair might be engendered to confirm.

The target may also enjoy being watched, putting on a show that convinces the voyeur they're discovered even if it's not true, and/or target may just start to talk with the observer well before they're sure the observer is anything more than their own imagination.

2) A ghostly relationship develops. Perhaps, but not necessarily as a result of above. This is perhaps the most trope, the invisible person dares to enter into physical contact with the subject of observation. This can range from soft romance to brutal nonconsensual abuse.

3) The invisible person feels obliged to intervene in an ongoing situation. Consider, for example, a guy who observes girl skinny dipping (perhaps, but not necessarily as semi-regular show by then) and realizes she's drowning. Being probably the only person in at least half a mile, they are morally obliged to act despite possible consequences. Or, whatever way a hero of dubious circumstances finds themselves uniquely situated to save the day.

4) The invisible person learns to know someone enough to involve themselves in their life. Voyeurism is highly addictive, and naturally develop into stalking, that leads to spying and learning, not necessarily secret, but intimate knowledge about a person. This can be easily rendered into competitive advantage on dating scene, even without need of manipulative engineering for a dramatic damsel in distress rescue, although that's always a possibility. As is catching target on a rebound, or even sabotage of their current relationship. Rather, however, after prolonged observation the target is already effectively part of the voyeur's life, even if unknowingly and one sided. This is also relationship risk however, knowing what one's supposed not to has to kept secret or explained away, or incurred very carefully. Differences of what invisible observation reveal and what the person shares willingly can serve for another aspect of depth too. Combined with (2) or (3) this may very naturally lead to "superhero course" double relationship in love triangle with self too.

I particularly like this idea where the invisible person has been stalking a particular person, maybe as one of several individuals they follow. However, they are able to witness the breakdown of a relationship and take the opportunity to enter their life in body. Already knowing so much about them, their musical tastes, their favourite shows and places to hang out means they are able to seem like the perfect lover... but as you say so many potential pitfalls, like knowing where they keep everything in their bedroom

Some more advanced/contrived concepts regarding invisibility and nudity I just feel like to enumerate here (even if not helpful)

- shy nudist / nudity fetishist. We kind of automatically assume that it's the voyeur who benefits from invisibility. It works other ways too, even if perhaps less obvious/popular. The person who wants to be naked, gets off on being naked, but not necessarily enjoying being seen can have fun too.

That can morph/develop into

-- pseudo invisibility. The person is in fact visible, but there's certain community efforts to convince them otherwise. Note it's also considered very cruel type of bullying, ghosting. However in right context it can be extremely enjoyable kink for either/both nudist and a voyeur. For example:

---- he's spying on a girl skinny dipping and/or sunbathing at a secluded spot. She notices, but doesn't react, deciding to enjoy it. Maybe even throws up a show. He maintains effort to stay low key. She invites her girl friends and talks them out of clothes, knowing he's watching. Eventually they too learn about the voyeur's presence, but likewise ignore him. He finally notices that even quite bad errors on staying hidden are left unpunished and becomes more bold, but still doesn't announce himself directly, and isn't acknowledged by the girls either. This develop to the point he's swimming and sitting right among the girls, perhaps even gets to apply sunscreen on them, but they never directly talk or share eye contact (if you think that's crazy, I have been that guy, briefly, well, I did talk to one of them but only when we were alone, and our lives away from the swimming hole didn't intersect either). It's obviously insanely fragile, and will break one way or another.

---- she likes to be nude, skinny dip and sunbathe. She finds a spot of wilderness she believes to be secluded to do so. Unknowingly, she's trespassing and her place is in almost clear view from part of the owner's backyard. She isn't disturbed though, instead the owner of the property lays down a local policy to treat her as wildlife -- free to be observed cautiously, but not to be intentionally disturbed or interacted with. Eventually she notices that she's caught, may try to hide, but realize her presence is ignored. Being a willing exhibitionist she became curious about the limits of that. Eventually she's hanging out around the private park and even yard, putting on a free show for the owner's guests but never acknowledged. This is marginally more stable, too isn't going to last. The temptation to domesticate her may prove to be too strong.

-- invisible nudity. The person is perfectly visible and freely communicable, but the fact they're nude is staunchly ignored by anyone (or at least certain limited group of people). In a general, borderline magical case, this is obviously discovered condition while the person is being nude where they supposedly shouldn't (either willingly or unwillingly). In more realistic circumstances, it's a consensual kink naturally pairing with "only one naked" event. The community treats the naked person as if either they were fully clothed, or as if their -- but only their -- nudity is to be expected and completely normal and unremarkable. Of course, such rule/condition is only introduced to eventually break it. Someone would learn (or acknowledge) that the naked person is indeed naked.

You could give the main character "invisibility at will," meaning they can turn invisible when they need to, but can remain visible if they prefer. That would give them more ability to interact with the other characters.

I also like sirhug's idea of making the invisible person a secondary character. Either a good person, or (like the recent Elisabeth Moss movie), an evil person.

Avoid those aerial drones with multispectral sensors.

A possible scenario: Brother-and-sister twins Bill and Beryl, with the power of voluntary invisibility, are in the same college, maybe in different co-ed dorms whose doors are never locked. They amuse themselves by wisping through the corridors and into rooms where they abuse sleeping students. They must wipe themselves clean after each assault so they can't be seen outlined in ghostly juices. If Bill did some butt-fucking, his feces-coated cock would be visible. Yikes!

But being invisible, the twins can get all incestuous without anyone being the wiser. For drama, they're seen by someone with IR vision. Blackmail ensues.

Y'all can work up other scenarios within the limitations.

You can impose those limitations if they are necessary to the plot. But I don't think they are mandatory. If a reader can suspend disbelief to the point of accepting an invisible (at will) human, they can probably also accept that clothing can become visible/invisible when needed as well, and IR, UV, and other EM emanations can also be masked.

For logical consistency, a mortal IP (invisible person) needs an invisibility-field generator. Alas, it won't hide footprints in soil or snow, nor vaporize raindrops or condensation in a fog. The IP can always be tracked somehow unless they're exercising pure magic, in which case another mage can find them. Let the IP's arrogance work against them for drama. Otherwise, invisible fucks have no cost to the rapist.

I kind of love the idea of multispectral sensors to not be fooled, but not really sure what one could do with that in a story, sort of going for high stakes espionage thriller.

Being necessarily nude I always assumed by default, it's fun that way and a fair price for the superpower, especially if it's controllable at will. You wouldn't want to go out in snow or even rain anyway as those can be easily unmasking for the invisible person regardless of technology involved.

If we accept that human skin can become (or emit) a metamaterial capable of bending light waves around macroscopic objects, sunburns aren't a consideration for limitations, imho, ditto if it's perfect transparency of the flesh (as was the traditional way, with food visible as it's being eaten, then fade away). Either way could be as transparent or visible for other spectra as useful for the story.

Invisibility field generator would more likely emit a bubble. That not only allows for clothes but also carrying objects within. Said bubble border cutting away parts of neighboring objects might be interesting unmasking effect.

Psychic/psychological invisibility may or may not necessitate nudity (I would still claim it does, but really it's entirely optional to the concept), being a parapsychology mind trick it likely doesn't effect any mechanical sensing devices at all, so the "invisible" (actually only consistently ignored) person would show up in photographs or on camera and even may or may not be visible in reflections. They images may still be ignored within their direct presence or even by recipient of transmission of the video call. Optionally, it may only affect people the "invisible" person is acutely aware about. It also may require constant high level concentration (some techniques talk about necessity maintaining "empty mind") to enable and maintain the effects; high levels of arousal, for example, may easily break that, rendering the person visible.

Ultra-miniaturization may be the next best thing to full-body invisibility. A were-mosquito morphs out of human form to sneak into places, expands (naked of course) to perform their nefarious misdeeds, then shrinks to fly away, hopefully avoiding all electric bug-zappers.

Dazzler camouflage is another path to effective invisibility. Sure, you remain visible, but not comprehensible -- you're only a disruption effect. Let's have an eye-avoidance pattern, so normal humans seeing you instinctively look away and forget they even saw anything. Only abnormal humans will notice you but they're clinically insane, right? No problem.

Similarly, a simple option is to appear so repulsive that people look away from you to avoid vomiting. None will notice you stealing jewelry, picking pockets, and fucking the blind.
