21 Runners Died in One Competition

The incident took place on May 22 in Baiyin of the northwest China's Gansu Province, where 172 runners attended a 100-km long cross-country running competition. The weather suddenly changed with strong wind and heavy rain after 20 km and some runners who felt cold but did not have anything to keep warm began to lose body temperature and stopped breathing very soon. In total 21 players died, which was the highest casualty of a single event in sports history. Even Israel had a less number of deaths in its recent clash with the Palestine forces.
