It can be hard growing up queer in a small town where there’s nary a gay person for miles, or at least not one who is out.

But how about some stories of lesbian hookups or relationships in small towns or off the beaten road? Only rule is the story has to be a positive one. No random homophobe showing up, just stories of ladies hooking up off the beaten trail.

For example:

In a tiny town, a girl comes to realize she’s gay. She confides in her grandmother who tells her that in her day, if you felt that way towards another woman, you’d go out to the woods on a walk and think about it while carrying a braided knot and a picnic basket. She didn’t know why that was the tradition but that’s what young women did. She also says she loves and supports her.

So our lead goes out to the woods with a braided rope and a picnic basket. She keeps waking and eventually hears a noise, only to find other girls walking with braided knots and baskets. They soon realize what’s up, lay their blankets outC and start eating.

2. Woman is a health nurse who has to go out to rural areas to check on her patients. The road gets flooded out so she thinks she’s stuck only to have a tow truck driven by a very butch woman who takes her home and then takes her to bed.

3. A woman stops at a truck stop, tired of the long drive home. The clerk takes pity and meets her in the bathroom for a quickie.

Quilting and other craft parties are common.

Lots of girl time.

Blizzard conditions,.....woman takes a short cut over the mountains and goes into a ditch, rescued by a self sufficient woman who takes her to a cabin, which she designed and built herself...blizzard worsens, roads are closed in the county...and the two become acquainted

Could be a sewing or dress making craft night once a month. They help each other get a good, close fit.

Women (and men) living together was traditional in the USA Old West. They just made sure to be dressed when hoofbeats approached their lonely cabins.

It's a small farming community. There is a factory in the county, but it's too far to commute to on a daily basis. So the menfolk of the town take a bus there on Monday morning, spend the week working and sleeping in the company dormitory, and then come home on the bus to their horny wives on Friday night.

But the women are horny all week long. And there is nobody with a dick to play with, so....

Of course one could reasonably ask what the men are doing on their weeknights in those bunk beds in the dorm.

Grandma is happy to teach her about Sapphic delights.

Sisters are doin' it for themselves.
Standin' on their own two feet.
And ringin' on their own bells.
Sisters are doin' it for themselves.

Sometimes song lyrics fit in a way the artists never intended.

I love this idea. It has an old country/urban legend quality to it. Maybe one of the women she runs into is a woman she has a secret crush on and after they hookup they agree to keep it a secret when they are in town.

I also like this one because its a clever twist on the rumor of how male truck drivers meet each other in truck stop mens rooms.

In a small backwoods town, most of the residents are actually related to one another. Given the girls don't really want to date one of their cousins, they do start getting curious and find it more acceptable to please one another than cousin Billy Bob down the road as there is no chance of off spring.

Another scenario is with an out of towner - say some one renting the old Jones' house for the summer - maybe a writer or artist from the big city who is looking for some peace and quiet. The artist, Amber, meets Mary Sue at the local grocery store whenever she goes in and invites her over to talk about literature or art or travel as Mary Sue keeps hoping to escape her small town life. After a few glasses of wine, Amber seduces Mary Sue, or is it the other way around?

Or perhaps one afternoon at the quarry the four best friends decide to go skinny dipping - something they've been doing since they were young girls. Now they are seniors in high school, eighteen, and full of sexual urges. They splash around as they always do and then Jenny ups and kisses Mary Sue. They are all shocked and quiet for a moment, but Mary Sue can't stop panting. She swims ashore and explains how the kiss was so much better than that of Bobby, her boyfriend. Soon they all want to try it with one another...

The Census might have been a good start. Hot young college girl trying to make a few extra bucks for a few weeks goes to this backwater town to get them to fill out the Census forms and becomes the pass around piece between the houses.

Town is big enough for there to be two lesbians, problem is that they're not that into each other. Out of towner comes in and they both compete for the fair maiden but accidentally out themselves to the whole town. Townsfolk assume that if they're both lesbians that they're an item and that the out of towner split them up so they chase her out of town and set up many situations that force the two now out lesbians together. Gradually they start falling for each other but don't want to admit it.

I really like this one. Potential for both serious emotion and comic relief.
