21+ years on Lit?

I realized, today, that my current account has been active on Lit since 2001. I'm not good at math, but I'm pretty sure that's 20 years. I had another account before this one, but left for a while. So... Sheesh.

The thing I can't help but notice is that nearly everyone I used to know are gone. Some have died. I'm friends with a few outside of Lit, which is nice.

I've also noticed that the culture of the forum changed radically, a while back, for the worse. I know this was driven, in part, by fear of legal concerns, technical issues, and the like.

There were so many fake profiles, people pretending to be something other than what they were. There were some who seemed pathologically fixated on external validation. Still, there were some who seemed willing to dive deep, open up, and discuss the real challenges and victories of life. I miss that, and them.

I'm not typically prone to waxing nostalgic, but...

Aw come on man, I thought that was a little uncalled for; while FGB/Fgarvb1/FisherAmen does do an inordinate amount of "Fascist Traitor" trolling on here but I thought that particular post of his was prefectly okay, and non-provocative. He's certainly capable of a lot worse.

With that said, I've been here 4 years but I've gotten more than a little pissed off at all the blatant racism and far-right extremism I witness on this, and especially on the politics forum. In many cases it's impossible to have any kind of serious or intelligent discussion with some of those people. FGB is far from the worst in that respect. And to his credit, he has only used three or four usernames; many of the worst blatant trolls use literally dozens.

Better join tech-talk forums if you're not willing to deal with fake profiles. Diesel / tow tech forums, classic car restore forums, boat / sail / Yamaha / Mercruiser forums, 4x4 forums, guitar / music tech and gear forums, camera / video discussion forums, gun / rifle / hunt / fish forums. Heck join a cook / bake forum. Well the former at least are mostly guys trading tech and tech advice.

On these types of forums, who knows what's real or not?

When people are online, they feel much more empowered to say things they normally wouldn't say in r/l as you can see in this thread.

If you're going to call another guy a fascist traitor to his face in r/l, better be ready for a reaction, possibly a very physical one. To do that in r/l, you'll need to size up the guy first. But online, the screen protects you from retaliation. That is why online bullying amongst teens tends to be much more severe than in r/l.

Attacking someone online like that is just low class. Esp when someone is just trying to celebrate his 20 years on Lit. Online personal attacks is like hitting below the belt, sucker punch and run, hit and hide. Another Lit thread down the drain.

For what it's worth, congrats OP. Doing anything for 20 years is worth a mention.

Those people are still around, all you needs do is look for them. Laugh at the dumb shits playing games, ignore the zealots that post the same conspiracy-laden drivel time after time and speak your mind in a calm clear manner. I try to operate here just as I would in the real world. Many don't. Because they are ensconced in a safe anonymous space in the ether, they feel it gives them license to let out their inner asshole.

I agree the board has changed. Those of us who have been around a long time can see the metamorphosis from what it was to where it is now. Unfortunately it is what it is. Aint nothing for it but to adapt and keep on keepin' on.

what brought you to lit the first time?

Thanks. I am honestly not sure. I was using AIM, I think, or one of the other chat systems, and I think someone told me about it. Lit's Chat system was a bit less regulated back then, and the breadth of the subject matter was kind of mind-blowing, for me. Some of my stories were inspired by role playing chats. I probably spoke with someone in Chat who was on the forum, and the rest is history. My memory is a bit hazy, to be honest. I want to say that I first started in '97 or '98.
