I'm not going to argue that the check shouldn't be a whole hell of a lot more stringent. It's basically just checking to see if the purchaser has a criminal record. Filling out the form takes longer than the check. When I bought mine, I would absolutely shocked how simple it was. Maybe there should be some way to check for mental health treatment, but there'd probably be ways around that, just like there are ways around what we have now.

Pistol permits are supposed to be issued by the county sheriff. Same principle, but that isn't an instant check. Many jurisdictions require some kind of an interview. I don't own pistols, so I wouldn't know exactly.

Nobody will address the inner cities, because I don't think they care. It doesn't further their goals to end it. The appalling number of murders that occur in the cities are used as a rallying cry for more laws, yet the laws will not be followed by those committing the violence, and the prosecutors in those cities will not prosecute. So it continues. Straw purchasers provide many of these weapons, and are not prosecuted. That might be a good place to start.

It is getting very dangerous, as more new gun owners every month would tell you. These people see the crime, the lax (or abandoned) laws not getting enforced, and understand they have to take responsibility for their own safety.

Great question. If they were law-biding up until they decided to murder, how does one legislate against that kind of behavior? Not by targeting items, one has to address the person.

In some states the background check for pistol permits can take well over a month.

The problem is when someone is formerly a non-criminal, who obeys all laws, then one day decides to stop and break those laws, there isn't a law that can stop them. Once people can agree on that, progress could be made.
