I have always wondered why folk post to say they have sent a pm. Surely, the person will see they have a pm and all we become clear when they read aforementioned pm?

I've always found this concept odd....

I've always found that if someone has sent me a PM, it shows up as a new message without any need for someone to let me know they have sent a message seperately.

Users aren't supposed to post email addresses in their personals according to the welcome post from the moderator, but it's obviously not enforced to any great degree. I don't know why users feel they need to put it into their personals, because as you noted, they may receive a variety of messages, including some of a negative or creepy type. I've gotten my share of off putting messages in my PM box; I don't need them coming to my email. If I want to continue a conversation with someone beyond Lit, I'll give them my email then, and not a moment sooner, but that's just me.

True.. also, it could always be someone harassing someone else.. so the poster is trying to get back at whoever's email it is they posted. And knows posting it here will lead to a flood of sexually explicit leering in their inbox..
