Yesterday when checking the social media Weibo (microblog) of China, I noticed the news that H&M, the Swedish brand of fast fashion, issued an statement to the effect that it won't source any cotton material from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, and the furious reaction of Chinese netizens to that news. Later it was reported a number of famous international brands of sportswear like Nike, Adidas, Puma had issued the similar statements earlier, then from today on, an extensive boycott was begun by Chinese consumers, even the online influencers of e-commerce were affected. Some Chinese movie and song stars also announced to terminate their respective contracts with the brands.
I don't really know what happened, there seems to be some misunderstanding. Cotton grown in Xinjiang is not produced by forced labor, as far as I know. Many migrant workers go there from neighboring regions to help the local Uygur people get in the cotton in harvest and get good pay for their work accordingly.
There cannot be any discrimination against Uygur people in Xinjiang, because they get better treatment than Han people, the majority of the population in China. When Han can only have one child for each family by law, Uygur can have three or more. In the nationwide entrance exam for colleges, Uygur students are often given favorable treatment with much lower admission requirements than the Han students.
